Interview…Director Mika Simmons on the Color, Comedy and Character of ‘My Week With Maisy’

As the year winds down, we’ve been trying to catch up with those creatives whose stories have surprised, entertained or delighted us. In the realm of short films, 2024 featured so many personal endeavors and original tales that shine a light on the human experience. And what more universal story can you ask for, especially this time of year, than a narrative about someone finding their heart thawing? It can be as satisfying for the characters as it is for the audience, and such is the case with Mika Simmons‘ latest directorial effort.

In My Week With Maisy, we are introducing to Mrs. Foster (played by Dame Joanna Lumley) as she begins chemotherapy. As luck would have it, she shares a treatment room with a very optimistic 9 year old over the course of a week. Despite how hardened the prim, proper and upright retiree fancies herself, it is the young and effervescent Maisy (played by Ellie-Mae Siame) who starts to break down the walls of Foster’s frigid fortress.

The simple conversations yield a change of perspective and outlook and the charming tale is enough to make Ebenzer Scrooge and The Grinch’s heart grow 12 times over. We were quite taken by the short, and even happier to speak to Simmons about her work directing Mark Oxtoby‘s short film which just won “Best Comedy” at the HollyShorts Film Festival last week. Congrats to the whole team. Huzzah!

On this episode of The GoSeeTalk Podcast Experience, we have a lot of laughs chatting with Mika as she tells us about the character, color and charm of the short. So cozy up to the fire, grab your hot cocoa or Earl Grey tea (with milk!) and enjoy this deep dive into one of the best shorts of this or any year!
