Interview…Composer Michael Wandmacher’s Unique Sound Palette and Working with Amy Lee on ‘The Seventh Turn’

It’s gotta be exciting and daunting being a composer. Many times they are asked to make a project better or give it life with some acoustic accompaniment. And it’s not often that there is a rule book or one singular path forward. Many of the brilliant people we’ve spoken with over the years have admitted to odd bouts of inspiration, dialogue with the filmmakers and many just kind of feel their way through the project. Art should evoke a desired emotion, and the best artists really hit us in the heart.

Today we spoke with Michael Wandmacher about his revolutionary score to Eric D. Howell‘s supernatural short film. His work here is highly unconventional, unique, and this specific project’s genesis was a number of years in the making. There’s not a single instrument in all 34 minutes of music. Further, this score was performed entirely by Amy Lee. Nothing other than her voice was used as source material to create everything you hear – no organic, electronic, or virtual instruments of any kind were used.

The personality behind the voice was just as important as how Michael cobbled it all together. Lee offered her signature sound for his mad scientist alchemy and the result is a moving, nebulous, and innovative sonic tapestry that “directly reflect the main character’s inner voice.” In this short, Ana is in a very troubled relationship, and the sounds you hear amplify the tension but they also offer some hope as she looks for a way out. We go into that and plenty more on this episode of The GoSeeTalk Podcast Experience.

The Seventh Turn is written, produced, and directed by Eric D. Howell and co-directed by Marta Milans. Based on the Spanish urban legend “La Chica de la Curva,” the film follows a young man driving through the night with his pregnant fiancée; his gaslighting manipulates her into rethinking a crucial decision for her and her baby’s well-being until a mysterious, ghost-like woman appears at a dark curve on the road ahead. Wandmacher’s score manifests the young woman’s living inner voice as she struggles with her inner turmoil.

You can watch The Seventh Turn teaser here, and will premiere online July 1, 2026, via the streaming platform Kinema, where audiences can watch on demand or host live virtual screenings and community events. The release date for The Seventh Turn soundtrack, featuring music by Michael Wandmacher performed by Amy Lee, will be announced shortly. We’ll update this post with that info when we have it.
