This Thursday, June 14, kicks off the inaugural Oak Cliff Film Festival, brought to you by the film fanatics of Aviation Cinemas, also known as the guys who resurrected the Texas Theatre. Get your VIP badges, and beginning at 5 p.m., start the festival off right in the Texas Theatre’s New Belgium Filmmakers Lounge along with visiting filmmakers and other film lovers.
Stick around for the festival’s Opening Night film, the modern day throwback to the 1950’s sci-fi thriller with a musical twist, The Ghastly Love of Johnny X, at 7:30 p.m., followed by a musical performance from local favorites, The King Bucks.
The festival also features repertory picks, C.M. Talkington’s Love and a .45 and the Murnau silent film Sunrise, including a live performance by the Austin band My Education, along with some spotlighted films such as The Turin Horse, legendary director Bela Tara’s final film.
Several films will screen during the festival as a part of the Narrative Feature and Documentary Competitions…and there is no shortage of shorts, with categories including Narrative shorts, Student shorts, Community shorts and a special experimental “Cinema 16″ shorts showcase with Amos Vogel tribute at Oil & Cotton. Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox will close the festival Sunday, June 17, with a one-time screening of the film at the Dallas Zoo at 8:30 pm.
With musical performances by: King Bucks, New Fumes, Diamond Age, Neeks, Night Game each night after the films.
The Texas Theatre is Official Festival Headquarters, Screening Venue and Filmmaker’s Lounge. Other Oak Cliff venues include: Turner House, The Bishop Arts Theatre Center, The Kessler, Belmont Hotel, the Dallas Zoo and El Sibil.
Don’t forget to check out the entire line up for the full list of narrative features, documentaries, shorts, concerts and other events that will be taking place June 14-17.
Individual tickets for films will be $10 at the door for each venue and at the Texas Theatre pending availability on the dates of the festival.
