It’s always incredibly rewarding getting to speak with the people who make the things we enjoy. The main and most obvious reason for it is that we are often times treated to fun or interesting stories of creative struggles/triumphs. Those behind-the-scenes looks at how the tiniest decisions contribute to the whole are inspiring on a number of levels.
Last year, we were thrilled to talk to Parker Croft – writer, director, producer of As Easy As Closing Your Eyes. It’s a short film that really hits home at it circles issues such as loss, addiction, and much more. It’s also wrapped up in a sci-fi vision of the future that, these days, doesn’t seem too far-fetched. It landed pretty hard in our hearts and minds and, as hinted above, Parker and composer Mandy Hoffman gave us the lowdown on what went into making all that.
Now fast forward a bit, and we find ourselves today talking to one of Parker’s friends and collaborators. Modern Family alum, Nolan Gould, is extremely passionate, well-versed, and has set his sights on more than just acting and improv. He’s been hard at work improving his talents and is branching out to writing and producing and the two are ready to share their short film, a character study called The Liars of Black Mountain Road, with the world.
This increasingly tense 12-minute story makes us a fly on the wall as two people (who may have never been right for each other in the first place) fall apart after a motor vehicle accident. The run time may be less than a quarter of an hour but it demanded a Herculean effort to put together. Croft and Gould tag-teamed this like a full-time job: eight hours a day, six days a week until it was finished. Now that’s devotion to the craft.
In our interview, we touch on how acting has shifted as a profession following the pandemic, the writer’s strike, and the world we live in where AI can produce speedy and unimaginable results with just a few prompts. It’s important for anyone in the entertainment industry to branch out, and you’ll find that being a multi hyphenate is not just an option. It is the equivalent of having a masters and a doctorate, sometimes, just to get your foot in the door.
The future is bright for young Luke, we mean Nolan, who couldn’t be farther from his Modern Family character. The Liars of Black Mountain Road is affecting and you’ll certainly want to know where these characters go after they drive on down the road. Now head ’em up, move ’em on, and enjoy our conversation with Nolan on this episode of The GoSeeTalk Podcast Experience!
