“The CineMagic 8-Ball” – In Theaters 3/16/12
When so many movies are released each weekend and trailers often seem better than the movie itself, what should one do? In this precarious situation, we consult the The CineMagic 8-Ball (TM) to help us see through the nebulous marketing haze. Doing so just might save us all a disheartening trip to the cinema and spare us unnecessarily springing for $7 popcorn. See what the 8-Ball says about this week’s releases… ——————————————————————————————————————————————- 21 JUMP STREET A pair of underachieving cops are sent back to a local high school to blend in and bring down a synthetic drug ring. Sharing absolutely nothing in common with the 80’s TV show, save for the name, this looks like a…

Ohhh Look…'Snow White & The Huntsman' Featurettes/New Footage
Next week we’ll be treated to the first full trailer for the upcoming film Snow White & The Huntsman. While we wait for that to drop, feast your eyes on the following four featurettes (sorry all of them have unskippable ads). These videos have lead ins from the stars of the film are cover all things from set design to costumes to the characters of this dark and gritty take on the famous story. One thing I wish they might have touched on is the musical score. Was what we heard in the teaser really James Newton Howard’s score or was the TRON/Inception inspired track just a placeholder? We’ll find out soon enough but…

Sweet Trailer…'Battleship'
Hasbro must be pleased as punch to see their toy lines expanded and adapted to the silver screen. Sure the plots to the respective stories may be contrived commercials but love them or hate them you can’t say you weren’t at least visually (or nostalgically) entertained. Next on deck, Peter Berg’s Battleship. Once a humble board game (that with or without sounds effects was a moderately fulfilling time waster) here we are with the 3rd full trailer for the film. For many this has been dubbed unofficially as Transformers 4 but that’s a knee-jerk reaction we should not debate until after you see this trailer (or read this ScreenRant interview with Taylor Kitsch). I mean this has…

Sweet Trailer…[REC] 3
If there’s one series that has really benefited from the found footage style of filmmaking it’s Paco Plaza and Jaume Balaguero‘s [REC]. Yes Paranormal Activity has done well but these days, most horror films shot this way would be a stretch to get people on board for anything past the first film. But here comes [REC]3, as both a prequel and a sequel to show us where the madness all started. Here is the trailer for the duo’s third zombified outing. Have a look… [REC]3 is the first of two sequels titled Genesis and Apocalypse. The first two films were co-directed by Plaza and Balaguero, but now the duo is pairing off with Placa taking Genesis and Balaguero, Apocalypse. As a…

Ohhh, Look…Sound and Scoring Featurette for 'John Carter'
Andrew Stanton’s first foray into live action filmmaking hit theaters hard this weekend (but not enough to take the top spot at the box office). While the visuals transported us to an otherworldly epic so too did the sound and music of John Carter. In this featurette, Oscar-winning film composer Michael Giacchino and Supervising Sound Editor Jonathan Null of Skywalker Sound briefly discuss their process and give us a glimpse into the scoring and sound design for John Carter. Have a look and thanks /Film for the heads up. Enjoy! Sound and music are always underrated so it’s neat to see it highlighted or appreciated even in a video as short as this. How many…

G-S-T Review…John Carter
Today’s science fiction has a debt to Edgar Rice Burroughs. The man created what is widely considered one of the first alien worlds that leaved and breathed outside of our own realm. He gave them their own language, religion, culture, and feuds. And he did all of this with the first appearance of John Carter in 1912. Before Star Wars, before Avatar, before Star Trek, there was the Barsoom (what we call Mars) adventures and it was pulpy, light, fantastic fare. They inspired hundreds, if not thousands, of writers to dream big. Now, 100 years later, a big budget film version finally exists and I think it’s a worthy showcase…

G-S-T Review…Being Flynn
A story about family and coping with the unavoidable bonds between us, Being Flynn is, in short, about accepting who you are so you can try to fix your own problems. Adapted from Nick Flynn’s memoir “Another Bulls**t Night in Suck City” the film is about Nick and his father going a very long way to come to terms with one another. You can try to run from your family but you can’t run from DNA and being family means they butt heads…a lot. That tends to happen with movie families but these are real people with real problems. It can be morbidly funny and Nick’s writing/personal experiences yield a more bitter than…

Interview…’Silent House’ Directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau
In conjunction with the release of Open Road’s one-take horror exercise, Silent House, I was presented with the opportunity to interview Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, the writer-director team behind the film, who many will remember as the duo behind 2003’s Open Water. I can’t deny that I was nervous; this marks my very first interview, for GoSeeTalk and in general, so naturally I felt anxious and a lot of pressure to represent myself, GST, and, ultimately, my subjects well. Luckily for me, Mr. Kentis and Ms. Lau made for one great, insightful, informative interview, providing a ton of detail about the process of making Silent House and working with star…
