From writer/director Dee Rees comes the feature length expansion of her award-winning 2007 short film Pariah. After the screening last night, I’d have to say this is probably the most surprisingly heartfelt and enjoyable film I’ve seen so far this half of 2011. Sporting a talented cast led by Adepero Oduye (and no less than 9 producers including Spike Lee), Pariah is a finely acted and written film, I’d seriously suggest you check out this honest and inspirational film… 17 year old Alike (pronounced ah-lee-kay) is quietly but firmly embracing her identity as a lesbian. With the sometimes boisterous support of her best friend, out lesbian Laura (Pernell Walker), Alike is especially…

Off the Shelf…’The Lion King’
There’s more to see than can ever be seen, more to do than can ever be done. Disney’s amazing and beloved feature The Lion King roars to life on Blu Ray and for a film that is 17 years old the transfer is just stunning. The tale of young Simba traumatized by the loss of his father is a powerful (and Shakespearean) story that can be appreciated by all age groups and all walks of life. Hakuna Matata this is always such a great film to revisit!

Bond 23 Officially Called 'SKYFALL' – Starts Shooting Next Week
Today the Web is buzzing with news of the new Bond film. Until now Bond’s upcoming film has been titled very simply Bond 23 but today we get a singular name: Skyfall. Sony Pictures had a big press conference about the next James Bond earlier today and all the key players of Skyfall were present including producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. The film, from Albert R. Broccoli’s Eon Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, and Sony Pictures Entertainment, is directed by Academy Award winner Sam Mendes and stars Daniel Craig, who returns for his third film as James Bond 007. Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan wrote the screenplay for Skyfall which goes into…

Ohhh, Look…More Sleek Minimalist Superhero Posters
A while back some snazzy graphic designers (like the ones populating Deviant Art) created some simplistic yet brilliant minimalist super hero posters. Then came several iterations of some rather fantastic minimalist movie posters. Needless to say things haven’t slowed down a bit and minimalism is the new black…or something like that. So as a remedy for your Mid-Wednesday blues, have a look some more rather sweet looking minimalist/art deco superhero posters after the jump. Thanks to Geekologie (sister site of I Watch Stuff) for the heads up…

Sweet Trailer…'Shame'
From writer/director Steve McQueen comes the controversial and sexual drama Shame. It’s about Brandon, a 30-something New Yorker, who’s private life (which allows him to indulge his sexual addiction) begins to unravel after his sister moves into his apartment for an indefinite stay. Starring Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds) and Carey Mulligan (Drive) this trailer gives just a hint at the anxious intensity to be expected in McQueen’s follow up to Hunger. Have a look, it’s pretty riveting… Wow huh? Seemingly in the same vein of Black Swan and other dark but powerful films like it, McQueen’s latest feature is a courageous exploration of modern life’s extremes. Despite the controversy around the…

Off the Shelf…’Cars 2′
In a case of mistaken identity, similar to The Man Who Knew Too Much, Lightning McQueen’s affably oblivious best friend Mater is swept up in a dastardly and ingenious plot that would make Ian Fleming smile. John Lasseter has a fondness for spy films (as described in his very informative commentary with co-director Brad Lewis). He and his whole family are huge fans of the Bourne series so he felt making Cars 2 a throwback spy film was the best way to approach this sequel. There are lots of amazing sequences and intriguing plot devices that make this like 007-lite as secret weapons, mysterious villains and action packed sequences abounded. However, like any kid who takes all their toys out and plays with them at once there’s a…

So many days of the year are devoted to holidays and each of us undoubtedly has our favorites. But what happens when Hollywood sets out to make a statement about a particular day of the year? Well if you’re like me then you won’t mind Hollywood doing a movie about Arbor Day (or an equally overlooked holiday) as long as the music is good and fits the story. Today’s FourScore hops around the calendar a bit and looks at the films that take good use of the most popular holidays and the scores behind them that help make these films so memorable and iconic. So which of these holiday themed themes is tops in today’s match up? Is it…

John Lasseter To Get Star On Hollywood Walk of Fame – UPDATED
John Lasseter, creative genius and one of the co-founders of Pixar, will very soon get his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The brilliant mind behind nearly all of Pixar’s hits will be honored next Tuesday morning in front of the famous El Capitan Theatre (6834 Hollywood Boulevard to you locals) where John will receive the 2,453th Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the Category of Motion Pictures. This event will be in conjunction with the DVD/Blu Ray release of Cars 2 and it should be a fantastic tribute to such a master of the imagination. For those of you in the area it might not be…
