    Off the Shelf…’Avengers: Endgame’

If you’re reading this now, Avengers: Endgame is, at the moment, the most financially successful film of all time. There are a lot of factors and responsible parties who can take credit for this film reaching that milestone, and even from a logistics standpoint, this film should be celebrated. It helps that the characters are so beloved (let’s face it, there is huge brand awareness), and the studio has such reverence for the material. Further, the actors playing these iconic superheroes have done so well with the roles. So well in fact, you could probably make a movie about these guys having lunch or hanging out in the living room (see…

    Off the Shelf…’Avengers: Infinity War’

Avengers: Infinity War hits Blu-Ray this week, and it is just as thrilling as it was in theaters. An event ten years in the making, Avengers: Infinity War is the best Marvel movie to date. Like the events in the story, the success of Infinity War is a team effort for which you can credit the studio, the producers, and the directors they trust with these dense narratives to ensure that each new story will top the previous effort. Joe and Anthony Russo have outdone themselves and raised the bar for all future MCU endeavors. Each of these iconic characters have grown in the last decade, and you really can feel…

    G-S-T Review…Avengers: Infinity War

It may sound incredibly trite and unoriginal to state this, but Avengers: Infinity War is the best Marvel movie to date. It’s an accurate statement to describe an event ten years in the making, and you’re likely to see top film critics quote something similar in trailers and ads after the film’s release. Like the events in the story, the success of Infinity War is a team effort for which you can credit the studio, the producers, and the directors they trust with these dense narratives to ensure that each new story will top the previous effort. Each of these characters has grown in the last decade, and you really can…

Off the Shelf…’Captain America: Civil War’

While we were not entirely fond of the previous installments in this series, Captain America: Civil War is a vast improvement in terms of dramatic storytelling. This third entry is much more sophisticated, and capable of handling multiple characters as opposed to the sluggish blur that was Avengers: Age of Ultron. The most memorable part of this (you can thank the Civil War comic series) is that there is motivation – true, legitimate impetus and consequences – for each character taking a stance. It’s easy to see why each character is so resolute, but don’t feel bad if you can’t easily take a side. Really, neither one is wrong. It’s amazing how…

Sweet (2nd) Trailer…’Captain America: Civil War’

2016 seemingly has its fill of comic-themed showdowns…flights, tights, and might all duking it out on screen. This month we have the Bats V Supes title-fight (if you’re into that whole DC thing), but as soon as the dust settles from that, it will be time for the Marvel camp to enter the ring. Theirs is an equally tense, and rather epic looking slug fest. So have a look at the second trailer for Captain America: Civil War and tell us which corner you’ll be in. Oh, and stick around to the very end of the trailer. Enjoy! An incident leads to the Avengers developing a schism over how to deal with situations, which…

    Sweet Trailer…’Captain America: Civil War’

If you were watching Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, then you already witnessed the awesomeness of the first trailer for Captain America: Civil War. It seems that Marvel’s Phase 3 is moving in the right direction and the Russo Brothers are bringing more of the energy and edge from their last outing (The Winter Soldier) with Cap. Also, it’s great to see how full circle the series is becoming with the shared universe. Case in point: William Hurt returning as General ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross! So far, so good Marvel. We’ll look past Avengers: Age of Ultron‘s underwhelming story because we were more than happy with Ant-Man‘s colorful, fun and upbeat entry to…

    G-S-T Review…Snowpiercer

Joon-ho Bong’s Snowpiercer is a grimy and dismal vision of the future. There’s nothing cheery about a post-apocalyptic future, and if living has more in common with being a prisoner of war (cramped conditions, no windows, questionably non-descript food) it might not be worth struggling for survival. But it’s not all doom and gloom. True, this is about preserving the last souls on Earth, but it’s not without a handful of wacky Korean conventions that few aside from Joon-ho Bong can provide with such style and balance. Even as the last hope for humanity speeds its way through our now frozen planet, there’s still time for humor peppering a multitude…

G-S-T Review…Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Marvel Studios continues their hit steak of their Avengers-based films with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Following Chris Evans’s successful turn as Steve Rogers in Joe Johnston’s 2011, directors Anthony and Joe Russo trade old-fashioned heroics for a seemingly throwback ’70s themed spy film. This change in direction is refreshing and helps better align Cap with the other larger-than-life heroes in the Avengers line up – It’s also thrilling, suspenseful and action packed. Not just that but the film, with all the layers of depth (and secrecy!) to the story, and the execution of this very comic book styled plot are a fantastic second at bat for the character and the…
