    Off the Shelf…’Lincoln’

Abraham Lincoln is considered by historians to be one of the best, if not the best, President of the United States of America. It is only fitting that one of the best directors of our time takes the helm on Lincoln.  Most audience members that wander into Lincoln will already be aware of the events that transpire throughout the course of the film.  We know what the outcome of the movie will be, because it is history.  However, the joy is in the journey as you are thrust back into an explosive time rife with turmoil and change.  Lincoln is ripped from the pages of history, meticulously reenacted and then hurled onto the big screen…

The 85th Annual Academy Awards – Full Winners List

Last night, the 85th Annual Academy Awards ceremony went off without a hitch and aside from some real shockers (like Ang Lee beating out Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino winning for best screenplay) it was an immensely delightful few hours. Despite what some think about Seth MacFarlane he really brought some life to the evening replete with some crass but still witty jokes, classic zingers, sock puppets as well as song and dance numbers that just made you smile. Like him or not we, and the crowd at the BigFanBoy/GoSeeTalk Oscar screening at The Angelika Film Center Dallas, thought he was a treat. But he was only the first in a…

    G-S-T Year in Review – Andrew’s 2012 Wrap Up

I’m willing to admit that last year, I talked 2011 a bit more than necessary. Not that my feelings on the year were dishonest; contrary to many, I thought well of 2011, a year that didn’t contain a plethora of lasting classics but still offered a lot of excellent cinema for our viewing pleasure. But to call it a “great” year may have been a stretch, and I’m willing to admit that now in light of the fact that 2012 has, in fact, been a great year. How can you trust me on this one? Simple: I’ve written my top ten list, re-written it, scrapped that, started over from the…

AMC Theatres' 'Lincoln' Q&A with Steven Spielberg & Daniel Day-Lewis

It’s getting close to the holiday season and that’s when studios unleash some of their most anticipated and sensational films. Among them is the Spielberg period-piece Lincoln. AMC Theaters recently held a Q&A with Steven Spielberg & Daniel Day-Lewis and the two, extremely talented and respected film personalities sat down to a whopping 42 minute session following the screening of their upcoming film. Spielberg always gives entertaining and immensely insightful interviews so have a look if you’re at all interested about the film (which between you and me looks like the duo can just collect their Oscars now). Enjoy! Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Hal…

    Sweet Trailer…'Lincoln'

I’m asking, in earnest, for someone to explain to me the “trailer for a trailer” phenomenon that’s gaining more and more popularity as days go by. What’s the point? What’s the purpose? Is the intended effect one that truly lives up to the word “tease”? Do studios think that teasing upcoming trailers will ensure that those clips receive more hits than they would otherwise? There are few things that bug me to the point of needing to simply kvetch about them openly when it comes to film, and this trend happens to be one of them. But that’s maybe besides the point. DreamWorks teased out footage from the full trailer…
