When so many movies are released each weekend and trailers often seem better than the movie itself, what should one do? In this precarious situation, we consult the The CineMagic 8-Ball (TM) to help us see through the nebulous marketing haze. Doing so just might save us all a disheartening trip to the cinema and spare us unnecessarily springing for $7 popcorn. See what the 8-Ball says about this week’s releases… ——————————————————————————————————————————————- CHASING MAVERICKS Based on the true adventures of big wave surfing legend, Jay Moriarity, and his unique friendship with veteran surfer, Frosty Hesson. Sweet Trailer…'Playing For Keeps'
The trailer for Film District’s pending romantic comedy, Playing For Keeps, tells us one thing right off the bat: Gerard Butler is still firmly interred in rom-com prison. The single most interesting detail here is that for once he’s not being forced to play American, which lets the film have a little fun with little kids and British pejoratives. (Listening to little children scream “wanker”, for various reasons, takes me back to childhood. It’s a long story.) I don’t know if that sells the film to anyone beyond its core audience, but it’s a change of pace. Have a look… Playing to the norms of the genre, Butler plays a has-been…

Gerard Butler To Lead Ridley Scott's Fact-Based Mercenary Thriller
Ridley Scott has signed on to direct and produce the story of Simon Mann, a former British army officer who, in 2004, attempted to stage a coup against the president of Equatorial Guinea. This film would be financed and shot by the Scott Free production label Ridley started with his brother Tony. Though Scott and Butler’s schedules are tied up with their respective projects for quite sometime the two might be a while before they even get started but it’s still an interesting collaboration. Thanks to Collider for the tip…

'300: Battle of Artemisia' Adds Minor Roles For Gerard Butler and Lena Headey
It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything solid about the follow up to Zack Snyder’s 300. But news from Movies.com gives us just an update (as well as some story line familiarity) beyond heresay and rumors a plenty. Producer Bernie Goldmann has confirmed that, “It’s a different story. [However] there’s a small part for Lena Headey. There’s a small part for Gerry [Butler].” Bringing back King Leonidas and Queen Gorgo in any capacity for this prequel will help tie the two film together even though they more than likely will be regulated to a cameo. Some argue the casting lesser-knowns in the first film helped its success. In that respect you could go as…

Off the Shelf…’RocknRolla’
Our friend Ruth at FlixChatter recently did a post about the opening sequence to Rocknrolla and after reading it, I thought “man I want to watch that again!”. Also, I just love that intro song by Black Strobe…to me, that whole bit just works. I really enjoyed RocknRolla in the theater and it is such a treat on DVD/Blu-Ray. Sure it’s not quite Snatch part II that fans were expecting, but I think it turned out well. All I can say about this film is that “Guy is back!!”…and now that Madonna is gone, I think we’ll be getting more quality Ritchie films in the near future. RocknRolla was one very…

Sweet Trailer…'Law Abiding Citizen'
Last week I wrote this post about the new poster for Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx‘s new movie Law Abiding Citizen. As intriguing as the premise was I took an apprehensive stance simply becasue this movie popped up out of nowhere with out much news leading up to it (and that’s usually a bad sign…do you hear me ‘I Love You Beth Cooper’?) Anyway, a trailer was just premiered on Entertainment Tonight and boy am I on board now!! This looks so much better than I thought and I’m excited to see more!! Have a look and enjoy…talk about a good way to end a ho-hum Thursday:) What do you…
