Exclusive: Interview (Part I)…Film Composer Brian Tyler Talks ‘Now You See Me’ and ‘Iron Man 3’

Brian Tyler is a film composer who is no stranger to high energy and action-oriented films. In fact there’s not a lot on his resume that isn’t an adrenaline-fueled thrill ride. This May audiences got a taste of Brian’s unique musical styling in both Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 and Louis Leterrier’s Now You See Me. They are two vastly different films with two distinct musical themes but they share one thing in common; they feature score that are more engaging, bold and fun that the events playing out on screen. Brian’s music, time and again, walks the line between a sleek sophistication and something that effortlessly raises pulses. We got…

Smoke, Mirrors, and the Mandarin In Iron Man 3

(Note: If you have not yet seen Iron Man 3, you probably should avoid reading this. Spoilers, big ones, lie just a few paragraphs down. On top of that, there’s some sensitive subject matter discussed here that’s tied to the film but stems from the upsetting topic of terrorism, which I imagine might make for difficult reading for some. Be advised.) Alongside discussions of its quality, its place in comic book cinema, and how it relates back to its source material, there’s going to be- or there ought to be- a healthy conversation about where Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 fits in our post-9/11 cultural dialogue. There’s something inherently daring about…

Ohhh Look…Iron Legion Seen On New 'Iron Man 3' Poster

They say you can’t keep a good [iron] man down. He’s beaten Obadiah Stane, kicked the “demon in the bottle” and even Whiplash. So for the upcoming third installment in Marvel’ s (and Disney’s) Iron Man franchise Robert Downey Jr. is back and he’s brought some friends. Over the years we’ve seen Tony Stark grow from a one many army to enlisting some help in the form of Lt. Col. James Rhodes, and in The Avengers it was, well, The Avengers. In this film he’s going up against The Mandarin (played by Ben Kingsley) and Aldrich Killian (played by Guy Pearce), and he’s gonna need all the help he can get. That help comes…

G-S-T Trailer Round-Up: Super Bowl Spots!

I’m not much of a sports fan. In fact, I’d go so far as to call myself a sports apostate; I live in New England and yet my interest in football and hockey is next to nil and my interest in basketball and baseball is mild at best. (Though I do like baseball. Frankly, I think that’s New England’s true favored regional sport, or at least Boston’s, but I may be the minority on both counts.) So it might not surprise you to learn that I tend to watch the Super Bowl only for trailer spots if I watch it at all. This year, I only bothered to catch the…

    Sweet Trailer…'Iron Man 3'

Well, we all knew this was coming, so let’s skip the preamble shall we? For my part, I’m tempering my reaction to this footage with caution. I’ve been burned before by great Iron Man trailers that failed to live up to their promise. Frankly, I don’t want to be in that position again, and so I’m taking the wary path. That said, there’s a lot in here that has piqued my curiosity and interest– namely Ben Kingsley’s voice and appearance as the Mandarin, and also the hint that he’ll actually represent such a real threat to Tony that the film will actually have stakes and tension. And of course there’s…
