This week, the stars of Raising Dion were in Dallas to promote their new Netflix show. It is so good! Adapted from a comic book of the same name, this is a wonderful and engaging story of a single mother dealing with her 8 year-old son, Dion, who just so happens to have super powers. There is a lot of heart in this sci-fi drama which is light and funny, but it also deals with some tough issues. Enjoy our time with Alisha Wainwright and Jason Ritter as we talk about the themes in the show, what they brought to their characters, and, of all things, funny ring tones. It…

Sweet Trailer…’CREED II’
To use some boxing vernacular, when Ryan Coogler‘s Creed came out in 2015, it hit me a left hook (the film and the score). Earlier this week, we got our first look at the sequel to this new Rocky-based franchise. To be honest, this does comes as a bit of a surprise. Not just because Creed is a tough act to follow, but going for the emotional connection to previous Rocky films (read: Drago!), seems like the story is already backtracking when it should be moving forward. You can thank Sylvester Stallone who returns in front of the camera, and behind it with a writing credit. It will feel a little…

Sweet Trailer…Rocky Spin-off ‘Creed’
We haven’t posted many trailers lately (being new Dad takes a lot of time) but this one I had to jump on. The upcoming Rocky spin-off, Creed, will follow the story of Adonis Creed, son of former heavyweight champion Apollo. Michael B. Jordan stars as the titular lead, and, you guessed it, he will seek out the one and only Rocky Balboa to be his trainer. Yet, after looking at the trailer, it’s not that simple of a story, nor will it be as hollow as it sounds. After all, this is written and by Ryan Coogler who made waves with Fruitvale Station. It’s gotta be better than Grudge Match, right? Enjoy…

G-S-T Review…Fruitvale Station
How can anyone review, much less watch, Fruitvale Station without bringing up the 18th Florida circuit court’s verdict in the George Zimmerman trial? The film, which comes courtesy of newcomer Ryan Coogler and marks one of 2013’s most noteworthy debuts, doesn’t reignite national discourse on social justice, race, and the second amendment in the US so much as it reinforces it; to call Fruitvale Station “timely” would be an understatement, though that’s not at all to imply shrewd, heartless planning on Coogler’s or the studio’s behalf. Chalk the picture’s release up to a happy (or unhappy, depending on how you look at it) coincidence, and then gird yourself for a…

G-S-T Review…Chronicle
Some might say found footage films have run their course but Chronicle makes a strong defense that there’s still plenty of ground left to cover. From micro-budgets and kind of oddball storytelling to macabre or esoteric subject matter, these types of films are finally shaking off the label of “trend” and are being met with more acceptance than something like a Grindhouse film. But there’s more art to this style than just dusting off some old camera and shooting aimlessly (someone please tell young filmmakers that shaking the camera is not the only way to make something ‘realistic’). If a story is good a film can exist in any medium. Many times a film…
