You know, as the old saying goes, you just “can’t please all the people all of the time”. Well as film fans, it seems that no matter what goes into a film we all have something to gripe about. It could be dialogue, a casting decision, the story line, music, the director and so on, but there’s bound to be one element keeping us from liking every film. So I’ve comprised a rather personal and unique topic to post on the site. The list below highlights the 5 films I love to look at but, as you’ll find out because of one reason or another, I am not entirely fond…

G-S-T Quick 5 – Favorite Costumed Performances
One of the most interesting things about a movie is when an actor dresses up in make-up or a costume and (when done well) there is a transformation to this character that is compelling and riveting. Below is a list I’ve compiled for 5 (not the greatest ever mind you but) very, very fine performances. These gifted actors just shine right through all the make up and flat-out impress the hell out me. I believe these actors deserve as much credit and praise as possible for their work in, what I believe to be, truly impressive and noteworthy turns…

G-S-T Quick 5 – Great Filmmakers Who Began in Horror
I’m no film historian but I have noticed something consistent in the films I’ve seen. While there’s no surefire formula for success in Hollywood, it’s a good bet that if you want to make it big, you have to start in horror. Now many people may not enjoy horror films but there are a number of uberly talented people working with buckets of blood, fake limbs and scary power tools. In many cases, those productions could just be their ticket to the big leagues. One day, I’d bet, we might just see one of those unknown, unsuspecting directors walking across the stage at Oscar night for something they’ll do later on…

G-S-T Quick 5 – Netflix Recommendations That Surprised Me…Round 1
One of the thing I like about Netflix is their “Watch Instantly” feature. That way I can try a movie out with out waiting for the DVD to show up, so if it sucks, I haven’t wasted 2 days waiting for its arrival. Anyway, after the successful viewing of Cashback (which I’ll write about below) I bought the compatible ROKU player (FYI: not a sales pitch) so I could transmit the signal to my TV. The also just released a workable disc for the Wii and both work fantastic!! So after some great viewings of films I would have otherwise never watched, I was so impressed with them after the…

G-S-T Quick 5 – Culturally Loved Movies That We Just Hate
A few weeks ago, Cinematical ran a post entitled “Movies that everyone seems to love but you” and that got me thinking. For years, I’ve had a grocery list of films that I just can’t get into, just don’t understand, or outright dislike. I have been thinking of these films from time to time but thanks to the post, I (after talking with Rob and Pete) have a great reason to consolidate these films. There is one common element in each of the films listed below that is a prime contributor making these films “not our cup of tea”, and that’s probably hype. If people always say, “that film is awesome!!“, and have said…

G-S-T Quick 5 – Hollywood’s finest working (foreign) actors
I’ve often said that some of the best American actors aren’t even from America. Without much more reasoning, other than I immensely like these actors and the varied parts the play, I present G-S-T’s latest Quick 5 list. Let me clarify, right off the bat, that this list is not some pretentious or whimsical list touting praise for the likes of near acting gods such as Sir Anthony Hopkins, Sir Ben Kingsley, Gary Oldman, Bill Nighy etc. What I am attempting to do here is celebrate great actors (which I love) who may one day reach the heights and milestones those legendary actors have already garnered. So in no particular…

G-S-T Quick 5 – Cheezy (But Still Fun) Films
Last night I watched Encino Man and it just reminded me of some other films that I really enjoy but were similarly (especially looking back now) cheezy. To be fair, they aren’t “god awful messes” but they still suffer from things like bad acting, and poor script writing, etc, and the quintessential synthesizer music that dominated the 80’s. The films listed below (in no particular order mind you) are ones that I find to be pure brainless, low budget, and ultimately overlooked entertainment…kind of like 5 episodes of Friends seen back to back to back. At the very least they deserve a second viewing (or first depending on the person).…

G-S-T Quick 5 – Underrated Animated Films
Growing up with animated features, one of the things I never really cared for in Disney films were the musical numbers. I was always more interested in the story, the characters and the interaction of the two. As I got a little older it seemed only natural that I gravitated toward Anime. I could care less for the singing and dancing but if the story was engaging, I was hooked. Below is the list of my top 5 animated films that I find enjoyable but are severely underrated. They didn’t make huge box office numbers and were, for the most part, ultimately passed over by many movie goers, although I…
