In comedy, timing is everything; timing can mean the difference between an audience erupting in belly laughs or awkward chuckles because they’re too polite to stay quiet. So when we sift through the individual pieces that constitute A.C.O.D.‘s whole, the element of timing emerges as chief among them. You need good timing to make bland jokes work, and without a good cast, there’s no good timing. How first time director Stu Zicherman managed to assemble his immensely talented group of actors and actresses- which starts with Adam Scott and ends with Jane Lynch – is a wacky mystery, but bully for him for finding the right people to make his…

Sweet Trailer…'The Company You Keep'
A few months back we posted the festival trailer for Robert Redford‘s The Company You Keep prior to its showing at TIFF. It got mixed reviews but managed to keep pace and handle the top drawer acting talent pretty well we hear. Yahoo movies has released the official theatrical trailer and it gives a little more of the plot while hints at the tension in this politically charged chase themed film…enjoy! The Company You Keep follows a single father/lawyer in upstate New York whose upper-middle class life is shattered when his past as a radical activist member of the Weather Underground is revealed and he is accused of having been the…

G-S-T Review…Killing Them Softly
Not every crime film has to appear the same. There can be grace and beauty, even in death, and time and time again, director Andrew Dominik proves this in Killing Them Softly. Raw, thought-provoking in unexpected ways, and supremely well acted, this is a crime film that stands out from the crowd for good and bad reasons. There’s a filthiness to one character in particular who you actually root to get knocked off. In fact, he gives such a disgusting and down-and-out performance you are left with a bad taste in your mouth. The amount of perspiration he seems to conjure up compared to everyone else is mesmerizing and loathsome…

Sweet Trailer…Robert Redford's ‘The Company You Keep’
Last month we posted the first promo images from Robert Redford‘s upcoming film The Company You Keep. Well hot off Lawless (check out our review here) Shia LaBeouf may continue to impress us as a capable thespian and not be the man-faced boy running from autonomous robots. In the film, Jim Grant (Redford) is a widowed single father and attorney living in Albany who was once a member of the activist/terrorist organization “the Weather Underground”. Wanted for robbery and the murder of a security guard, Jim has been in hiding for more than thirty years. When another former Weatherman (Susan Sarandon) turns herself in to the FBI, aggressive young journalist Ben Shepard…

G-S-T Review…The Cabin In The Woods
A love letter should feel familiar. They should have a lot of the same qualities one would expect. But what if that letter was also a loving critique? That’s exactly what Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard did with their horror film The Cabin In The Woods. Yet, despite how smart and searing the film can be as a criticism, it stands as equally entertaining for fans and non-fans of horror. All of that isn’t to say that the film is lacking in thrills or blood. The violence is brutal and creative enough to keep from feeling ho hum. Especially in the first half, while the second becomes something else entirely.…
