The 86th Academy Awards aired last night and showcased everything we love about Hollywood and the film industry. Lots of great talent took home some deserving awards but it was Alfonso Cuarón‘s space fiasco Gravity which nabbed a total of 7 awards, including Best Director, Cinematography plus Best Original Score (go Steven Price!!).
Dallas Buyers Club seemed to be a big surprise taking both the male acting categories and even hair and make-up. However the big shocker was that American Hustle, a film that was far less than the sum of its spectacular parts, took home zero awards after being nominated in 10 categories. It was a very competitive year but it looks like the bubble finally burst on David O. Russell. Pity. Also shut out were two of our personal favorites Philomena and Wolf of Wall Street which is a shame.
But in the end it was Steve McQueen’s riveting 12 Years A Slave that took home the Oscar for Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay as well as a very deserving one for Supporting Actress which went to Lupita Nyong’o. Ellen DeGeneres was in top form as were music director William Ross and the Academy’s orchestra. In case you missed it or need a recap here the full list of winners are below.
