“The CineMagic 8-Ball” – In Theaters 3/16/12

When so many movies are released each weekend and trailers often seem better than the movie itself, what should one do? In this precarious situation, we consult the The CineMagic 8-Ball (TM) to help us see through the nebulous marketing haze. Doing so just might save us all a disheartening trip to the cinema and spare us unnecessarily springing for $7 popcorn. See what the 8-Ball says about this week’s releases…

21 JUMP STREET

A pair of underachieving cops are sent back to a local high school to blend in and bring down a synthetic drug ring. Sharing absolutely nothing in common with the 80’s TV show, save for the name, this looks like a new spin on the classic raunchy buddy flicks from that era. Also, Jonah Hill is one half of the duo on camera and off it as he co-wrote this script…and we all know how gifted he is at profane ad-libbing.

CASA de mi PADRE

Scheming on a way to save their father’s ranch, the Alvarez brothers find themselves in a war with Mexico’s most feared drug lord. Will Ferrell stars in this parody of late 70’s early 80’s Mexican TV/films and spaghetti Westerns to seemingly hilarious results. If this is as funny as the trailer is boasting, then it’s a good bet Casa de mi Padre will be a home run for fans of  Senior Ferrell.

DETACHMENT (Limited)

A substitute teacher who drifts from classroom to classroom finds a connection to the students and teachers during his latest assignment. Tony Kaye (American History X) directs this intense and compelling film and with headlining talented like Adrien Brody, Christina Hendricks and Marcia Gay Harden to name just a few, really, how can you lose?
