    “The CineMagic 8-Ball” – In Theaters 12/14/12

When so many movies are released each weekend and trailers often seem better than the movie itself, what should one do? In this precarious situation, we consult the The CineMagic 8-Ball (TM) to help us see through the nebulous marketing haze. Doing so just might save us all a disheartening trip to the cinema and spare us unnecessarily springing for $7 popcorn. See what the 8-Ball says about this week’s releases… ——————————————————————————————————————————————- ANY DAY NOW In the late 1970s, when Marco, a teenager with Down syndrome who has been abandoned by his mother, is taken in by committed couple Rudy and Paul, he finds in them the family he’s never…

    Sweet Trailer…'Pacific Rim'

This may well be the shortest word-for-word piece I’ll ever write for Go, See, Talk!, but that’s only because the highly-anticipated trailer for Pacific Rim speaks for itself. Big monsters, big robots, big imagination, and big excitement all wrapped up in a 2:16 clip. Count this one at the top of my “must-see” list for 2013, and sound off in the comments. (Courtesy of Badass Digest) If the viral website and sweet looking “jaeger” diagrams didn’t do anything for you, this trailer should have rocked your world; it did ours! Directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi (The Brother’s Bloom) Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day and Clifton Collins Jr. Pacific…

    Sweet Trailer…'G.I. Joe Retailiation'

Channing, Channing, Channing…just look at all the trouble you’ve caused. Sure you can dance, sure you can fight, sure you can play an emotional sap when the script calls for it. But this, this is something else. Your presence and influence on Hollywood (specifically box office draw/return) exceeded anything anyone could have expected. So much so that you not being in a movie can cause the entire stuido to tap the brakes just so you could be in the movie. In case I’m not making any sense, I’ll go back a bit. Roughly one month before the Summer release of G.I. Joe Retaliation (and with ad campaigns in full swing and toys heading to store shelves)…

Sweet Trailer…Zack Snyder's 'Man of Steel'

Faster than a speeding bullet. More powerful than a locomotive. Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Look! Up in the sky! Who is it?…you know full well who I’m talking about right? But this isn’t your father’s Superman. Earlier this year two brief teasers for Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot Man of Steel were released and they got started quite a buzz. Starring an impressive cast let by Henry Cavill as the titular MoS, Snyder looks to take us up up and away to a Superman story right for the times and to please scores of comics fans. This looks like it’s gonna rock…enjoy! Zack Snyder is at…

Tarantino (Likely) Won't Kill Bill Again

Fleeting comments from a filmmaker walking the red carpet at the premiere of their latest film shouldn’t be taken as set-in-stone guarantees. That’s just good sense. But as we wait for the impending release of Django Unchained, any news about Quentin Tarantino’s future projects is interesting news, so take this little tidbit well-salted. The guys over at We Got This Covered managed to ask QT a couple of questions at the opening of Django Unchained in Toronto, and the continuation of the Kill Bill series was at the top of their list. In the past, Tarantino has expressed a desire to expand on the Kill Bill universe with two more movies (revolving around crippled Crazy…

Off the Shelf…Drafthouse Films’ ‘Miami Connection’

Story has it that one afternoon in 2009, a curator from Austin, TX’s Alamo Drafthouse Cinema stumbled across an eBay listing for a 35mm print of something called “Miami Connection.” The Alamo bought Connection unseen and just as blindly added the print to their film archive. Like opening a time capsule that no one (including the people involved with the film) hoped would ever be found came a film that most likely would be a dud. Well luck favored the Alamo that day as Miami Connection was not a bad investment. Quite the opposite in fact as this deliciously wretched B-Movie has been wonderfully accepted at off-beat festivals and movie houses across…

The Criterion Files: Rome, Open City

Rome, Open City: Directed by: Roberto Rossellini Written by: Federico Fellini, Sergio Amidei Starring: Aldo Fabrizi, Anna Magnani, Marcello Pagliero Cinematography by: Ubaldo Arata Music by: Renzo Rossellini Released: September 27th, 1945 Neorealist cinema has featured into the Criterion Files before– I wrote about Vittorio De Sica’s classic entry in the movement, Bicycle Thieves, much earlier this year (and followed that piece up with an examination of Matteo Garrone’s Gomorrah, arguably a contemporary neorealist effort despite valid arguments that neorealist cinema no longer exists)– but Rossellini’s landmark contribution to neorealism, Rome, Open City, represents a very different side of that Italian-born aesthetic. For all of its somber qualities, Bicycle Thieves…

    Sweet Trailer…Joseph Kosinski's Sci-Fi Thriller 'Oblivion'

After a week of posts making reference to Universal not showing us anything about Oblivion they put out a trailer that does not fail to impress. Cruise stars as Jack Harper, one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on a post-apocalyptic Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete. Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything…

Ohhh, Look…Teaser Poster For Joseph Kosinski's 'Oblivion'

Earlier this week we shared some, what we thought at the time were, concept artwork for Joseph Kosinski’s sci-fi thriller Oblivion. Well as we soon found out, it was actually unreleased images from the Oblivion graphic novel that was cancelled. Still it was something to gravitate toward since we are about 4 months away from the film’s release and, to date, had seen exactly zip. Well that all changed today as the first official teaser poster has recently been released. It’s grand and very Prometheus inspired but still a little dull. Have a look for yourselves… Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth.  Part of…
