First Photo of Benedict Cumberbatch in 'The Fifth Estate'

Permit me to take this opportunity to admit two things: that I’d totally forgotten about the existence of The Fifth Estate, and that I’m ill-acquainted with the work of Benedict Cumberbatch. I like the guy! Don’t get me wrong! But I’ve only made it through half of the first episode of Sherlock and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Four Lions make for a really small sample size. Maybe, given that 2013 looks to be the year of the Cumberbatch, I should go back and watch The Other Boleyn Girl, re-watch Atonement, and catch up on Sherlock so I can join the legions of fans foaming at the mouth for the…

Spielberg & Hanks Attain Source Material For Third WWII Miniseries

Band of Brothers and its follow-up/counter part The Pacific are two fantastic WWII HBO miniseries from Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. They play on TV all the time and seem to run non-stop on Spike TV and the like between Memorial Day and the 4th of July. They’re always worth the time and it’s almost impossible not to get swept up in the stories/characters. You can watch either series over a weekend and it would certainly be time well spent. But I digress. Well if you couldn’t get enough of that realism and the well-crafted stories, get ready for this, the duo are developing a third World War II project…

G-S-T Double Take Review…The Last Stand

Go,See,Talk resumes their Double Take Review series with the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger to headlining status in Jee-woon Kim’s small town shoot em up The Last Stand. Today Marc Ciafardini and Andrew Crump chime in on what works and what doesn’t in the latest from The Governator and American film debut of of Korean director Jee-woon Kim. Take 1 – Marc Ciafardini: When the son of a drug cartel baron breaks out of a US prison and does a Cannonball run for the Mexico border, there’s only one man who can stop him. Yes, it sounds as trite as any 80’s actioner or B-Movie from that era, but it’s a Schwarzenegger vehicle…

    G-S-T Review…Mama

Seeing those four dreamy and all encompassing words “Once Upon A Time” at the start of any story is a dead give away that what you are about to see is a fairy tale. Translation: not real. But what else does it mean? Is that meant to keep kids (or adults) from being scared? Or is this the only way to make us buy what the story is selling? Not sure but this has all the familiar hallmarks of a fairy tale. This isn’t Little Red Riding Hood and this sure ain’t  kids stuff. Mama calls back to the darker Grimm fairy tales and, as per all the advertising, is in the vein of Pan’s…

    G-S-T Review…LUV

Sheldon Candis’ greatest coup in directing LUV, his debut feature, could well be securing rapper-turned-all-around-entertainer Common as his leading man. Common only started making moves in the acting world in the early 2000s before landing roles in Smokin’ Aces and American Gangster in 2007, but he’s been writing rhymes about manhood and the value of family since 1992; combining that background with his natural, easy charisma, he feels like a natural fit for a story about a young boy learning life lessons from his uncle over the course of a single day in inner city Baltimore. When Common speaks, he speaks with authority. Were we in Michael Rainey Jr.’s place,…

Cuarón to Strand Bullock, Clooney in Space This October

Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity, one of G-S-T’s most anticipated releases of the year, has been a long time coming after delays kept it from seeing release in the fall of 2012. I’ll admit that I held some fears about its chances of seeing the light of day this year in reserve– who holds onto a movie driven by two major Academy darlings for this long?– but those fears have been put to rest: the film now has officially been given an October 4th release date. We know precious few details about Gravity beyond Cuarón’s position at the steering wheel, Clooney’s and Bullock’s starring roles, and what the synopsis tells us, but I…

Anne Hathaway Circling Modern-Day Rendition of 'Taming of the Shrew'

Anne Hathaway has the kind of star power that lends excitement to nearly any project she chooses to associate with, so it’s nice to see her sign onto a production with huge potential. Yesterday, news hit that Hathaway– fresh off a great year, a Golden Globe win, and a so-surefire-it-hurts lock on an Academy win– is considering taking a role in a pending adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew for Working Title Films (the studio responsible for Les Misérables). I’m not going to lie; Hathaway feels like a natural fit for a work by the Bard, and a comedy such as The Taming of the Shrew in particular…

    “The CineMagic 8-Ball” – In Theaters 01/18/13

When so many movies are released each week and trailers often seem better than the movie itself, what should one do? In this precarious situation, we consult the The CineMagic 8-Ball (TM) to help us see through the nebulous marketing haze. Doing so just might save us all a disheartening trip to the cinema and spare us the cost of ridiculous concession stand prices. See what the 8-Ball says about this week’s releases… ——————————————————————————————————————————————- MAMA Five years ago, sisters Victoria and Lilly vanished from their suburban neighborhood without a trace. Since then, their Uncle Lucas and his girlfriend, Annabel have been madly searching for them. But when, incredibly, the kids…
