Nearly a year ago a devastating earthquake and tsunami rocked Japan on March 11th 2011. In memory of the disaster, Fuji Television, in cooperation with Ridley and Tony Scott’s production company Scott Free London, will be producing Japan In A Day, a follow-up to the documentary A Life In A Day. Similar in structure, this will be a 24-hour self-portrait of Japan filmed by the public using any recording device. Additionally 200 cameras will be donated by Fuji for the documentary and will go to people in those areas most affected by the events. The 84th Annual Academy Award Winners (Plus Tribute To The Snubbed Films of 2011)
The 84th Annual Academy Awards came to a close at the Kodak Theater (we’ll move past the fact they’re filing for Chapter 11) with some big wins from some expected but very deserving films and film makers. Hugo and The Artist went toe to toe and both walked away with 5 golden statues. The supporting/leading actor categories were really a tough call as the fields were all populated with masterful performances and talented individuals. But in the end Christopher Plummer, Octavia Spencer, Jean Dujardin and Meryl Streep took the wins for their fine, crowd pleasing and powerful roles. Before Act of Valor begins we are shown a short intro narrated by the directors (Mike McCoy, Scott Waugh) explaining why they chose to cast real active duty Navy SEALs. These elite soldiers have hard-learned skills, mannerisms, muscle memory and a language that can’t be handed over to an actor to exhibit with the same conviction. Like watching Michael Jordan dunking or Muhammad Ali in the ring the SEALs are the very best at what they do. Watching them in the movie it’s clear that McCoy/Waugh made the right choice.
