Ohhh, Look…New 'Cars 2' Characters

There’s one automobile related film I’m excited about this year and it ain’t Drive Angry. No, it’s Pixar’s Cars 2 and today we have our first look at 4 of the newest characters which not only look stunning but are backed with some high-profile voice talent. Over the past few weeks we’ve gotten to see all the new models for Cars 2 via the “Turntable Series” (click here to check them all out). This is week 8 of the new model reveals and each one really is better looking than the last.

Have a look at the next round of Cars 2 characters:

Below we have snazzy airliner Siddeley, Rod “Torque” Redline, Sir Miles Axlerod and Nigel Gearsley…

Siddeley (voiced by Jason Isaacs) is a state-of-the-art British twin-engine spy jet. At 176 feet from nose to tail and an impressive 157-foot wingspan, the super sleek silver-bodied Siddeley streaks through international skies at record-breaking mach 1 speeds. Outfitted with all the latest in high-tech spy equipment, including cloaking technology, defensive weaponry and afterburners, Siddeley is Finn’s steadfast partner-in-fighting-crime around the globe.

Rod “Torque” Redline (voiced by Bruce Campbell) is considered by many as the greatest American spy in the world. Recruited after the Cold War for both his brains and brawn, Torque is a tough-as-nails Detroit muscle car with a mastery of disguises. In his latest deep-cover operation, he obtained vital information about the plot to sabotage the World Grand Prix. So Rod plans a rendezvous with his British counterparts to share his discoveries at the World Grand Prix welcome reception in Tokyo, Japan. But with the bad guys hot on his tailpipe, Rod is forced to ditch the intel early and with the first party guest he sees – a rusty American tow truck named Mater.

Sir Miles Axlerod (voiced by Eddie Izzard) is a former oil baron who has sold off his fortune, converted himself into an electric vehicle and has devoted his life to finding the renewable, clean-burning energy source of the future—ultimately discovering what he believes is the fuel everyone should be using.  Axlerod is also the car behind the World Grand Prix, a three-country race he created that attracts the world’s top athletes—but it’s really an excuse to show off his new wonder-fuel, Allinol.

Nigel Gearsley from Warwickshire, England, is an Aston Martin DB9R racer bearing #9. He got his start racing the Speed Hill Climb—a unique, completely uphill race through the Aston Hill Mountain Area that his family has run for generations. Nigel’s racing career has been anything but an uphill challenge, as he’s won nearly every start in the past few years on the Grand Touring Sports Car circuit, including a string of podiums at Nurburgring and Le Mans. His cool British refinement makes him an imposing presence on the World Grand Prix courses.

Now, for those of you wondering why this particular Pixar film was given a sequel, have at what John Lasseter had to say about it:

From the sound of it, looks like Lightning McQueen really had nothing to do with it. Kind of funny that Mater was the character that really kicked this all off. For those interested, here’s the official synopsis:

Star racecar Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) and the incomparable tow truck Mater(voice of Larry the Cable Guy) take their friendship to exciting new places in “Cars 2” when theyhead overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. But the road to the championship is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and hilarious surprises when Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage. Torn between assisting Lightning McQueen in the high-profile race and towing the line in a top-secret spy mission, Mater’s action-packed journey leads him on an explosive chase through the streets of Japan and Europe, trailed by his friends and watched by the whole world.Adding to the fast-paced fun is a colorful new all-car cast that includes secret agents, menacing villains and international racing competitors.

Pixar’s Cars 2 is set for release in both 2D and Disney 3D on June 24th this Summer. Whaddya think? Anyone “revved” up for this yet??

I know I’m in a minority but I really enjoyed Cars. Most people say it is one of the worst Pixar have done but even their lesser films are better than most. Cars, for me, was one of the most enjoyable and I’d rate it higher than The Incredibles and one or two others.

I see how it gets panned and even I didn’t like it on first viewing. But like I wrote in an earlier comment, there’s a really heart felt message underneath all the kiddie stuff. But Cars better than The Incredibles?? Bold statement Dan because to me The Incredibles is pretty tough to beat.
