They say that “you can’t keep a good man down” and on that note, the same can be said of the stars of Peter Segal‘s pugilist themed film Grudge Match. In the upcoming film Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro play two bitter boxing rivals who are coaxed back into the ring for a grudge match 50 years after they fought for the title. Today we get a look at the headlining stars as well as Kevin Hart who plays the duo’s fight promoter.
It’s a goofy enough premise for a film, one that prompts a hearty “why?“, but the idea of seeing getting to see Rocky Balboa and Jake LaMotta (the actors, not their characters) square off in the ring sounds crazy enough to work – even more so in a comedy. Stallone has been making a resurgence in the last 5 years and while the idea of geriatric boxing sounds morbidly boring, just ask Stallone if old timers can still rock n’ sock and bob and weave with the best of them. He’ll probably push a copy of The Expendables so hard into your chest you won’t know what hit you. I bet no one had to twist his arm too hard to get him to play a boxer again and that’s just fine by us. While the still shot above isn’t anything to write home about it’s still got us excited so consider us all in.
Grudge Match is written by Doug Ellin and Rodney Rothman and helmed by Tommy Boy and 50 First Dates director Peter Segal. Aside from the star power of Stallone and De Niro, the project boasts some impressive talent which includes Kevin Hart, Alan Arkin, Kim Basinger and Jon Bernthal.
Warner Bros. Pictures have slated Grudge Match for wide release this Winter on December 25th, 2013. Talk about a Christmas present!
