Random Film Thought of the Day…02.16.11

OK kiddos, here’s the question of the day: What do either pictures above have to do with each other?…If you said a “Neverending Elevator Ride (or Music)”, you’re close. Allow me to elaborate on the answer though. I rode an elevator this morning and of all the music in the world (aside from the standard in elevator music the dreaded Girl From Ipanema) I heard the theme from The NeverEnding Story. Yes, that’s right, The NeverEnding Story. And no it wasn’t the version from the movie, or this version from A Newfound Glory (which is pretty awesome btw). No it was a legitimately redone version of the song in the stylings of,…

FourScore Match-Up #8: “It Came From Outer Space”

We’ve heard that expression tons of times and proceeding those very ominous words we’ve seen a wide range of alien life come to Earth via the Silver Screen. Some want to help us and some try to collect us. Others want to either meet and greet us, or just plain eat us. One thing is certain, whatever their objective, cinematic aliens are fascinating. Sunglasses, glowing fingers, human facades, or acid blood, you name it, it’s all so mysterious. But what makes these better than the rest? Well aside from great designs (K-Pax not withstanding) few extra terrestrial films have been given such top notch orchestral treatment and the movie is that…

    The 64th Annual BAFTA’s – Winners Announced

The 64th Annual BAFTA’s were this past Sunday and anyone not living in the UK (or those who don’t have an insane cable with a full BBC lineup) missed out on the action. Well it was no surprise that The King’s Speech was one of the night’s big winners. Hmm, a British film winning a majority of British awards…did not see that coming:P Some of the highlights were as follows: The King’s Speech was named Best Film at tonight’s Orange British Academy Film Awards, held at London’s Royal Opera House. The film also won six other awards:Outstanding British Film, Original Screenplay and Original Music, as well as a trio of performance awards for Geoffrey…

    Sweet Teaser…'X-Men: First Class'

Yesterday we saw this mesmerizingly bold new X-Men emblem (below) and today we have the first official trailer. Quite uncanny, wouldn’t you say? Sorry, I couldn’t help myself. Well this is more of a teaser than anything else but still more than an announcement. Funny how there are so many categories for something as brief as a movie trailer. Oh well, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies, behold – Xavier’s First Class: Well that certainly lived up to the hype. I’m totally digging the direction of this (using the Cuban Missile Crisis as a backdrop to the story) and the retro feel of it has me more than intrigued. I’m hopeful especially since Mr.…

Ohhh, Look…The New Characters of 'Kung Fu Panda 2'

Over the years, Dreamworks Animation has been pretty hot on the heels of Pixar and dare I say even going toe to toe with their last couple of films. How to Train Your Dragon was a huge hit and they have just been putting out higher and higher quality pictures. I think it’s safe to say they have found their groove. Personally I adore 2008’s Kung Fu Panda and am eager to see what Dreamworks can do to expand the story. So what will Kung Fu Panda 2 have in store for us? From the looks of the images below, quite a lot! From ScreenRant, here are the first images of the new faces in…

    G-S-T Review…The King’s Speech

I never thought of a film being able to exist as both a “period piece” and a “buddy flick”. The first is a very traditional type of film, the other a more modern kind of story. Well, The King’s Speech is definitely one that equally encompasses both types of stories. It’ is a very sly companionship film that, when the credits roll, you realize isn’t mainly about pre-WWII history or British nobility. Well it is, but mostly it’s about friendship. Friendship that, like most things in life, is rocky when forced. Yet after the bumps in the road are passed it builds to become a life long relationship. Beyond anything that on the…

Ohhh, Look…"Class Pic" from The Oscar Lunch!!

We just got word of this from Twitter and while it’s not exactly news, it’s just pretty cool. Since the Oscars are right round the corner, apparently every year there is an Oscar Lunch where all the nominees are gathered together. Man, that’s one helluva photo op! Have a look below, and click the photo to a much larger high rez version of it. At first it, looks like an unassuming “class photo” then, one by one, all the stars pop right out. Kind of like Romper Room. I see Chris Nolan and Hans Zimmer and James Franco:P Can you spot them all? And you get G-S-T bonus points if you…

    Sweet Trailers…'Super Bowl XLV Ads'

For those of you who saw the Super Bowl you’ll know there were some pretty dope spots for this year’s . This morning I heard a radio announcer say that “in two weeks, a majority of those who watched it will forget the score, but the commercials will live on“. Good point, however I believe the same can be said for a few of most of those Movie Spots. But whether the movie in question will actually be any good (or live up to this hype) is another thing entirely. So whether you missed the Super Bowl and this is your first time them or if you just want to see…

    Sweet Trailer…'Ironclad'

Here we have the official trailer for a film we head about years ago it seems…no wait that was for Purefoy’s other Medeval film Solomon Kane. Anyway, set shots and trailers for Ironclad have been hitting recently but this seems to be one of the better ones…though, isn’t that the case for Brititsh trailers?:P Sure looks like Medieval films are getting their resurgence, or perhaps renaissance is the better word. Now that Gladiators, Spartans and the like have nearly run their course, jolly old English era films are again looking to be a hot item. Last year we had Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood which was met with mostly mixed reviews (I kind of liked it). Now…

    While You Were Out…1/31 – 2/4

Yup, the Super Bowl is almost upon us and it’s pretty effen snow, cold, icy and more here in lovely Dallas. If it’s any consolation, fans of both the Packers and Steelers should feel right at home. Hey boys, don’t say the Big D never did anything for you:P This week we had some good trailers, news bits and if you missed any of it, here’s some of the more noteworthy items. So if you’re snowed in like us (yes Castor, 3 inches can debilitate an entire city if you don’t have the man power or utilities to clear the roads) please allow yourself the time to catch you up on this…
