Sweet Trailer…Ridley Scott’s ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’
It’s been a while since a Ridley Scott film has graced the silver screen. However it’s been even longer said screen has shown with a story that audiences have taken to as much as the films from his glory days. His ‘period piece’ films seem to be more miss than hit these days but the man can handle an epic that’s for sure. In fact we’ll even go so far as to defend Kingdom of Heaven (though the Director’s Cut is by far the superior effort) as one of Scott’s best works. In his latest film, Exodus: Gods and Kings, Scott puts his spin on the story of Moses as he…

G-S-T Review…Ender's Game
We’re living in a time when the phrase “unfilmable novel” can no longer serve as an excuse for poor page-to-screen adaptations of quintessential stories on the receiving end of the Hollywood treatment. Over a decade ago, Peter Jackson shouldered the burden of that challenge by taking J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings books and turning them into a trilogy of three hour and change films (or one ten hour film, depending on your perspective) whose joint success led to criminal cultural misuse of the word “epic”; nobody can so cavalierly write off their inept filmmaking based on a text’s inclination toward being transposed onto celluloid. It’s a blatant cop-out. Which…

Sweet Trailer…'Ender's Game'
There’s a lot to like about the first trailer for Ender’s Game, Gavin Hood’s adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s beloved, iconic, and utterly important science fiction novel; it’s big, it’s grand, and it looks to appropriately capture the gravity of the narrative’s scope. Maybe the most awe-inspiring note here isn’t in the footage itself, but from the story surrounding the project. It’s hard to believe that after years of being told that Card’s book- which focuses on gifted children being trained by the military to combat an alien menace- is unfilmable, audiences of both fans and the uninitiated alike are finally going to get to see his vision on the big…

G-S-T Review…Iron Man 3
While we film fans, die hard comic aficionados and non, can thank Jon Favreau (and Robert Downey Jr.) for bringing Iron Man to life in an entirely fulfilling and believable way. That said, there were more than a few problems with its formulaic sequel. So, sometimes, it’s necessary to bring some fresh legs into the game to help the series go out with a win. For those of you not sure who Shane Black is, check out Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Monster Squad, The Last Boy Scout and of course Lethal Weapon…we’ll wait. There’s a common set of themes running though all his movies and without sounding like it’s…

Ben Kingsley, Simon Pegg, Richard Ayoade and More Join LAIKA’s Upcoming ‘The Boxtrolls’
After the success of their last film, the sweet and hilariously witty horror-movie homage ParaNorman, LAIKA and Focus Features have started work on their third project together. It was just announced by LAIKA President & CEO Travis Knight that the two companies behind the current Academy Award-nominated animated feature have begun production on The Boxtrolls. Based on Alan Snow’s bestseller Here Be Monsters, the project has already assembled a stunningly high-caliber voice cast that includes Ben Kingsley, Elle Fanning, Toni Collette, Jared Harris, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade and Tracy Morgan. The Portland-based animation studio’s 2014 release of The Boxtrolls is a 3D stop-motion and CG hybrid animated feature which will be directed…

Sweet Trailer…'Iron Man 3'
Well, we all knew this was coming, so let’s skip the preamble shall we? For my part, I’m tempering my reaction to this footage with caution. I’ve been burned before by great Iron Man trailers that failed to live up to their promise. Frankly, I don’t want to be in that position again, and so I’m taking the wary path. That said, there’s a lot in here that has piqued my curiosity and interest– namely Ben Kingsley’s voice and appearance as the Mandarin, and also the hint that he’ll actually represent such a real threat to Tony that the film will actually have stakes and tension. And of course there’s…

Off the Shelf…’Lucky Number Slevin’
Certain films out there have twist endings that really make your jaw drop. However to be a successful “twist ending” usually the film will be able to perform and amaze on repeat viewings. Lucky Number Slevin isn’t one of them. However it still has quite a lot going for it and a fairly impressive “twist ending” despite being directed by virtually unknown Paul McGuigan and scripted by multiple cancelled show script-writer Jason Smilovic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30EeGDiI7MA
