    Off the Shelf…’The Lion King’

There’s more to see than can ever be seen, more to do than can ever be done. Disney’s amazing and beloved feature The Lion King roars to life on Blu Ray and for a film that is 17 years old the transfer is just stunning. The tale of young Simba traumatized by the loss of his father is a powerful (and Shakespearean) story that can be appreciated by all age groups and all walks of life. Hakuna Matata this is always such a great film to revisit!

Hey Hollywood! Enough With The Prequels, Sequels & Reboots OK?

If there’s one thing that pisses me off, first as a fan and second as a collector, it’s that studios just don’t know when to end a series/franchise. When something is done right, gets a great fan base (with both movie goers and critics) and finishes strong you’ve got something destined for the history books. We would hope that the studios know enough to be done with something…sadly that’s just not the case.

G-S-T Quick 5 – Things I Never Understood About 'Star Wars'

For the umpteenth time Star Wars has be re-released to the masses but for the first time ever it is available on Blu Ray…well sort of. In the SW universe there’s a fan base that has an absolute split contention about as polar as the Dark and Light side of the Force. It’s between fans of the original trilogy where half claim the ‘Theatrical Version’ is best, the other half of that fan base for some unknown reason really does enjoy the “Special Enhanced Editions”. Where do I stand? Easy, I’m in the first camp. I’m part of the millions of fans who were won over with the version that George claims…

The Rocketeer FINALLY Gets A Blu Ray Release!!

Last week we got some great news and after months, nay, years of praying one of my very favorite films is getting the Blu Ray treatment it deserves!! For two decades Cliff Secord and the gang have been garnering fans and after all this time this underrated gem has reached the level of cult classic. I’m an admitted die-hard Rocketeer junkie (try typing “The Rocketeer” in our search bar and you’ll find plenty of posts where I’ve either mentioned it or flat out gushed over the film or its fantastic score) and as such Joe Johnston’s serial adaptation of Dave Stevens’ graphic novel has made more trips to the VCR in my childhood than any other film. The previous DVD was…

New to Blu? Criteria To Help You Choose the Films You Love

So after the dust of the dust of the HD War has long since settled and been swept up you’re ready to make the jump to the Blu side. Good on ya and allow me to welcome you to the club! As a converted member of the Hi-Def masses (initiated back in Dec 2009) I’ve bought many titles, even upgrading many I already owned, and learned a few things along the way. At the end of the day I can honestly say the switch was totally worth it however it’s not all wine and roses. Provided you have a sufficient TV and player, the final step is finding titles to take full…

To All You 'Gladiator' Blu Ray Owners…

Hello World Marc Here: While I’m not much on A/V tech news this is movie related (and regarding one of my all time favorite films) so it behooves me to tell you all as no doubt it affects some of you cinephiles out there. Anyone who rushed out in 2009 and snatched up Paramount’s Sapphire Series Blu Ray edition of Gladiator may not have been at all happy with the transfer. Not only did the edge enhancement and digital video noise reduction create a sub-par transfer, the disc itself features tons of technical glitches. Bad day for those first in line huh? So while Paramount finally released a fixed copy…

So What Will the Future of Home Media Look Like?

The inspiration for this post comes from Dan with his great post on The Grim Future of Video Rental Stores. Check it out, it’s a great read! But his post got me thinking: If people continually stop going “out to get a rental“, or even purchase the film outright, what will happen to all present and future media, especially when the time comes for a new format war? Dan further asked a damn good question which was “will there be a need for a new format ten years from now?“. My answer is yes, and as a film fan I will take a guess at what the future of Home Media will look…

G-S-T Quick 5 – Movies That Should Be on Blu Ray

With the abundance of Blu Ray titles on the market, I find myself thinking that there are a few worthy (and much-needed) titles that deserve the “New Blu Treatment”. I know it’s a slow process as there’s got to be an incredible back log of films still to be made over. Yet, as I see what has been released the more, I feel sorry for these titles not getting a fair shake and my heart goes out to the patient fans who remain wanting. What’s worse it that some of these films never even got anything more that a “VHS dump” version on DVD. So the fact that they are…
