    Sweet (Teaser) Trailer…’Blade Runner 2049′

As a movie related website, we’ve been on the web since early 2009. But we never would have thought that we would ever report on a sequel to the 1982 classic, Blade Runner. Now while we’ve never been as taken by Sir Ridley Scott’s seminal masterpiece as the rest of the world has, over time, I’ve personally come to appreciate its importance and the popularity behind it. So while we are many months out from its release, behold, the first trailer, err, “announcement” for Blade Runner 2049. It’s mostly filled with sandy hues and a lot of text, but it still looks so very noir. Thirty years after the events…

G-S-T Review…Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to take the world by storm, but that shouldn’t be news to anyone. It is Star Wars after all, but with J.J. Abrams at the helm, things looked really good from the get-go. The film isn’t perfect (pacing is sluggish at times, and villains, at this point, are under-cooked), but it is highly enjoyable, and that’s all thanks to solid writing, and the collage of themes and characters both old and new. Abrams, after proving his mettle revitalizing the Star Trek franchise, brings us a story that expands on everything that has come before and, more importantly, hits the right chord with fans. Episode VII,…

    G-S-T Review…The Age of Adaline

Is there such a thing as the one? One person who causes us to let our guard down, and then turns our world around? If you’re lucky, you find that person in your lifetime. But contrary to the words of the philosopher Jagger, time is not on our side. Adaline however has that envied yet double-edged luxury, only she uses her borrowed years to stay away from love. Not out of fear of her own heart breaking…but those of whom she meets. Lee Toland Kreiger’s The Age of Adaline is a charming and endearing love story, one that has all the makings of a modern classic. It’s also not the…

    G-S-T Review…The Expendables 3

Right out of the gates, The Expendables 3 aims to show audiences it means business. Not surprising that it’s less than a minute, a mere 54 seconds to be exact, before our heroes’ heavy hardware sends the first of many non-descript bad guys reeling. Like the nameless goon peppered with bullets (rubber bullets it seems from how toned down the action is) pain sets in for the audience as well. The “pain” comes not from groan-inducing dialog, or over-the-top action, but the brain cells struggling to comprehend the blur that is the next 125 minutes. Even with the starts and stops, this hokey 2-hour action fest whisks along which is one of a…

    G-S-T Review…Ender's Game

We’re living in a time when the phrase “unfilmable novel” can no longer serve as an excuse for poor page-to-screen adaptations of quintessential stories on the receiving end of the Hollywood treatment. Over a decade ago, Peter Jackson shouldered the burden of that challenge by taking J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings books and turning them into a trilogy of three hour and change films (or one ten hour film, depending on your perspective) whose joint success led to criminal cultural misuse of the word “epic”; nobody can so cavalierly write off their inept filmmaking based on a text’s inclination toward being transposed onto celluloid. It’s a blatant cop-out. Which…

    Sweet Trailer…'Ender's Game'

There’s a lot to like about the first trailer for Ender’s Game, Gavin Hood’s adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s beloved, iconic, and utterly important science fiction novel; it’s big, it’s grand, and it looks to appropriately capture the gravity of the narrative’s scope. Maybe the most awe-inspiring note here isn’t in the footage itself, but from the story surrounding the project. It’s hard to believe that after years of being told that Card’s book- which focuses on gifted children being trained by the military to combat an alien menace- is unfilmable, audiences of both fans and the uninitiated alike are finally going to get to see his vision on the big…

    G-S-T Review…'42'

If Jackie Robinson’s fate had seen him turn out an unsung hero, 42 might be more worthy of protest. Taken at face value, it’s strictly inoffensive; it’s the tale of how Jackie Robinson broke the glass ceiling in baseball, diluted into a series of uplifting bullet points before coming to an abrupt and all-too-convenient close (because nobody wants to end a feel-good movie with reality).  There’s a blueprint to this sort of cinema, and Brian Helgeland follows it doggedly in his third- technically fourth, if you count Payback*- directorial outing, hitting beat after crowd-pleasing, expected beat. Maybe that’s not a crime worthy of filmmaker jail, but it’s certainly not a guaranteed path…
