Even in the short time he’s been directing films, David Ayer has shown he has a no frills approach to storytelling. Just a quick glance at films like Training Day, Harsh Times, and End of Watch, will reveal, consistently, very specific types of characters – ones so gritty, visceral and real that they seem to come through the screen. Now no one ever proclaimed that war is glamorous, but Ayer seems to go to great pains to make sure no one would ever imagine war as anything other than a living hell. Further, it’s hard to call any soldier a “hero” once you learn the lengths some may go to…

G-S-T Review…Charlie Countryman
Nobody can fault Charlie Countryman for a lack of trying, that’s for certain. They can, of course, fault it for being a schizophrenic and ultimately useless piece of cinema, but as I cringed at the lesser merits of Fredrik Bond’s debut film, I also found myself yearning to give the whole production an “A” for effort; for every one of Charlie Countryman‘s myriad failures, there’s a palpable sense that Bond and his cast – particularly leading man Shia LaBeouf, grown up and shockingly greasy from his stint as Neurotic Human Protagonist in the Transformers series – are striving for something in every scene. Exactly what they’re striving for could remain in contention for a good…

The Company You Keep follows a single father/lawyer in upstate New York whose upper-middle class life is shattered when his past as a radical activist member of the Weather Underground is revealed and he is accused of having been the…

Sweet Trailer…Robert Redford's ‘The Company You Keep’
Last month we posted the first promo images from Robert Redford‘s upcoming film The Company You Keep. Well hot off Lawless (check out our review here) Shia LaBeouf may continue to impress us as a capable thespian and not be the man-faced boy running from autonomous robots. In the film, Jim Grant (Redford) is a widowed single father and attorney living in Albany who was once a member of the activist/terrorist organization “the Weather Underground”. Wanted for robbery and the murder of a security guard, Jim has been in hiding for more than thirty years. When another former Weatherman (Susan Sarandon) turns herself in to the FBI, aggressive young journalist Ben Shepard…

G-S-T Review…Lawless
In his latest film John Hillcoat delivers a fantastic period-piece film based on the book “The Wettest County in the World” (an account of the true-life tales of author Matt Bondurant’s family). Titled simply Lawless this adaptation chronicles the events around the Bondurant family at the pinnacle of their prohibition-era moonshine business and how three Virginia brothers became legends unto themselves. Historically party to and at the center of the infamous “Franklin county moonshine conspiracy” the trio faced opposition on many fronts not just from the authorities but also bigger and similarly illegal outfits. A wild ride for any film fan the events depicted become even more engaging as it’s revealed that their story…

Ohhh, Look…Brit Marling, Shia LaBeouf and Robert Redford in 'The Company You Keep'
Robert Redford‘s upcoming film The Company You Keep is based on Neil Gordon’s novel of the same name. It tells the tale of a civil rights lawyer named Jim Grant (played by Robert Redford) and single father who go on the run when a brash young reporter (played by Shia LaBeouf) exposes his true identity as a former 1970s radical fugitive wanted for murder. As their actions spark a nationwide manhunt, Grant sets off on a cross-country journey to clear his name. Until now this project has been flying under the radar but sporting an impressive cast which includes Sam Elliott, Brendan Gleeson, Terrence Howard, Richard Jenkins, Nick Nolte, Anna Kendrick,…
