[Fantastic Fest Review]…Frankenweenie 3D
Tim Burton has created so many fun and wonderful universes over the years. However, it isn’t until now, in the feature length adaptation of his short film of the same name, that Burton takes us to a place he’s rarely let us see – his childhood. Made purely with kids in mind, and as this is a Disney film, Frankenweenie is a heart-warming kid friendly flick full of Burton’s patented frights, fun and his distinctive look. Still slightly odd-ball, he goes a little esoteric and the result is a playful mash up of two things he’s very familiar with; his love of monster movies and the pressures of being an awkward…

G-S-T Quick 5 – Highly Anticipated Animated Films Left In 2012
2012 has seen some really great animated films so far. While computer graphics have taken up most of the animated market in the last decade, they have also improved in quality and spectacle at an almost geometric rate. This year film fans were treated to the likes of Brave, Madagascar 3 and Ice Age 4 which all did very well and proved to be feathers in the caps of their respective animation studios. But while we were excited about them, and they did well from huge marketing campaigns, they didn’t need much help from the blogging community due to their existing fan base. That said however, here are 5 films that have either slightly smaller budgets…

G-S-T Review…Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
There shouldn’t be any surprises within ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER. The film is either won or lost largely based on its name. So as an audience member, you can quickly judge whether you will balk at the idea of a young Abraham Lincoln fighting vampires with a silver-edged axe. The real grey area is how much of that time spent will live up to what you have in mind. Director Timur Bekmambetov is known for striking visuals and pushing the limits of what you can comprehend. He certainly does both in this film, with quick cuts around blurred action sequences and a set piece that follows Abraham and his vampire…

G-S-T Review…Dark Shadows
A common fact easily overlooked: television isn’t the same medium as film. As modes of visual storytelling, they may bear a family resemblance, but they represent long-form versus short-form approaches to narrative. In short, the rules, as well as the limitations and advantages, differ greatly for both. A television show has room to breathe and stretch its legs by its very nature, for example, while a movie is more contained by its own. Conflating the two, then, is a mistake, and one which Tim Burton makes repeatedly throughout Dark Shadows, his interpretation of the identically-titled 1960s/70s televised Gothic soap opera; the result is so overstuffed and hopelessly rushed that there’s…
