    Off the Shelf…'Road to Perdition'

In the follow up film to Sam Mendes‘ American Beauty, this truly remarkable film wins me over ever single time I view it.  Personally, I am a huge fan of all Tom Hanks’ work and this is probably my absolute favorite.  Tom Hanks plays his role quite a bit more reserved that what I am used to seeing.  In doing so, he does more with looks (as opposed to pages of dialog) to convey emotions that come through so believably this was just a fine performance all around.

New “Studio Ghibli” feature on the horizon…

Well if you call Summer 2010 “on the horizon“, but I bet that’s the timing of  Japanese release – It’ll probably take at least another 6 months beyond that to make it stateside.  Anyway the fact that something from Studio Ghibli is coming out with anything has already brought my day from good to grrrEEAAAT!!  Hayao Miyazaki and his legendary Studio Ghibli have recently announced the name of their upcoming film.  From Twitch film, we get the following except: Studio Ghibli made the official announcement of their new full length feature film titled Karigurashi no Arrietty (The Borrower Arrietty). The film will be an adaptation of Mary Norton’s Carnegie Medal…

    Interesting…Quentin Tarantino's Top 8 of 2009

I’ve become fan of Quentin’s all over again since this year’s absoultuely awesome Inglourious Basterds remake.  So for you fans (new and old) The Hollywood Reporter has this little video of Quentin’s Top 8 movies so far this year.  Interesting, albeit short and incomplete… [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlGNpNasNNI] Funny when he says, “obviously not mentioning my movie“.  The more I find out about him, the more I realize he’s not as pompous as I once thought.  Definitely not high and mighty if he’s including Observe and Report and the Sam Raimi return to horror camp Drag Me to Hell in his list of “Best Films”.  Ah, to each his own I guess, but what do you think?  Anyone…

Ohhh, look 'Robin Hood' trailer and photos galore…

Sometimes there are no words for something so cool.  Well this is one of those times!!  After waiting and anticipating the Ridley Scott/Russell Crowe Robin Hood film, here is a great bunch of images to wet out appetites.  So again, no words, just behold!! And for the icing on the cake, the teaser trailer…let’s hope Youtube doesn’t yank this due to some kind of copyright violation… You know, I didn’t expect anything from this production before the new year so I think I just got an early Christmas present:)  I think it’s pretty damn great for the first thing we’ve seen since the “first look” some months ago, and I bet…

    Sweet Trailer…’The Crazies’

Ask anyone who’s a film fan and they’ll tell you that George A. Romero gets credited with starting the zombie genre.  Although zombie films are my guilty pleasure, his sequels are starting to get a little thin and tired but it’s awesome to how his films have inspired the likes of other “zead” aficionados like Simon Pegg and Ruben Fleischer.  One (supposedly) flattering thing about the generation of people he’s influenced is that his films seem fit for a re-imagining by up and coming filmmakers. In 2004 Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) remade Dawn of the Dead to great success, not only launching his career but very properly paying homage to Romero. Well, following suit is…

    FYI – Upcoming G-S-T Top 10

Hello World, Marc Here: When the last decade (the 90’s for those of you with math deficiencies) was in it’s final moments, we at G-S-T were all in college eager to graduate and make our marks on the world.  Cinema and it’s special effects were (at the time) at it’s zenith, George Bush was gearing up to campaign for the presidency and the rest of us on the planet, hesitant about Y2K scare, were ready to usher in the new century. Rob, Pete and myself (collaborating on a rare and important G-S-T post) are hard at work debating what will comprise out list of 10 “Best Films of the Decade”. …

Off the Shelf…’The Treasure of the Sierra Madre’

Just when I wonder if Humphrey Bogart could be any better or cooler than his turn as ‘Rick’ in Casablanca, I give this DVD a spin and find a role which almost takes that hallowed top spot.  I’ll say right out that I like the character of ‘Dobbs’ in a way that most people probably love ‘Darth Vader’ or ‘Dr. Jekyll/Mr Hyde’. Now, like those other two, ‘Dobbs’ isn’t all bad and he’s not even a villain but certain events continue to unfold before him and he choses to allow himself to slip so far from the proud man he once was.  ‘Dobbs’ is nowhere as slick as the legendary ‘Rick Blaine’…

    Signs of the Robot Apocalypse…

For a post this random, I would usually title it something like “And Now for Something Completely Different“.  Today I think this deserves to be titled “Run for your Bloody Lives“.  In a world where we are surrounded by computers and little gadgets that do all the thinking for us, these two videos are excellent examples of how quickly The Matrix can soon become reality.  Sure they’re cute now because they dance and are only about 12 inches tall but just wait til they are 12 FEET tall and have one mission: Enslave. Humanity. As optimistic as I’d like to be, I hope these robots one day become as helpful as the…

    Sweet Trailers…'Daybreakers' and 'Kick-Ass'

Well I know I am a little late in posting these but I thought I would make up for my tardiness with a perfect “one-two punch” of what looks like trailer gold.  Previously we had posted the first Daybreakers trailer, but this new one looks like icing on top of icing on an already sweet cake.  Please trailer gods, don’t tease me like this.  I truly hope this film will be as good as they make it look.  The last (supposed) vampire hunting extravaganza I can recall was Blade: Trinity (which was an awful, awful mess) so here’s hoping Daybreakers brings this fun incubus sub-genre back to form with 2 words: Willem.…

    Flickchart, Flickfights and yours truly…

Hello World, Marc Here: Last week I had the awesome privilege of recording a Flickfight podcast which is the official podcast of the uber-addictive site Flickchart. I have been fond of (and yes, addicted to) the site since the ‘beta testing’.  Soon after going live on 09.09.09, Flickchart launched their wildly entertaining podcast which is headed up by two hilarious movie afficinados/filmmakers, Travis Betz and Devin Barry.  On behalf of G-S-T, I was so happy to be part of the show and just had a blast debating, praising, and bashing whatever movies Flickchart gave us. For those of you interested have a listen to the fun 65 minute movie romp.  Click this link to hear…
