Seems like every year a documentary film comes out telling us how messed up the world is and how everything we’re doing is wrong or is going to kill us. Although the subject matter of The Cove is far from preachy, its message is really a shocking call to action. World famous (and later infamous) dolphin trainer Ric O’Barry’s work on the 1964 TV hit “Flipper” inspired future generations of dolphin lovers. However the more in demand dolphins became, the more their capture is considered a cold hard money game. Yet, The Cove’s intent was not to focus solely on the “Dolphin Trade” (which in itself is a problem worthy…

Ohhh, look…Classic Movie Posters Re-imagined
A few weeks ago, /Film ran a post featuring the inspired artwork of very talented young artist Brandon Schaefer. While /Film showcased the more popular film posters, I went back to look at Brandon’s site. Well lucky I did, as I found more than a few surprises. However, the one I was most excited to see was The Rocketeer. Since it is one of my favorite movies (and I’m not alone am I Ruth?) I just had to post it. I’ve also attached some of the ones I really enjoyed. Damn this guy is just uber talented. It’s tough to find that delicate balance between minimalist and boring. But he…

Sweet Trailer…’Robin Hood’
Well the day has come dear friends…the final trailer for Sir Ridley Scott’s upcoming Robin Hood. The trailer just before Christmas was good, the Super Bowl spots (although short) were better but now we have the best trailer yet…well, one would hope because it is the last before it hits theaters on May 14, 2010. Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott team up again for what can only be described as “pure awesomeness”. In this version of the classic and legendary tale, Robin’s life is depicted from his early days in King Richard’s army. It further tells continues his story as he returns to Nottingham and creates the band of mercenaries who…

Acting on TV: No Longer the “Death-Knell” for Film Actors
Think back, if you will (or can), to the years ago before Will Smith, Bruce Willis, Johnny Depp and George Clooney were household names. Do you remember their roles on Moonlighting, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, 21 Jump Street and The Facts of Life? Some of you just might be able to I’m sure. Will and Bruce are among the very few actors who have successfully, and for a continued amount of time, enjoyed the transition from TV to film. They pump out movie after movie and are the poster children for successful cross-overs. But what about the reverse effect? Do any actors successfully going from film to TV get similar recognition? Or are…

Off the Shelf…’They Live’
I have always been a big fan of anything John Carpenter. Be it Big Trouble in Little China, The Thing, Escape From New York, hell, even In the Mouth of Madness was umm, interesting but watchable. But in the halls of everything JC (John Carpenter, not Jesus Christ) this is one of his more fun fares and is a definite quirky sci-fi 80’s staple.

The 82nd Academy Awards: Na'vi for "Suck it, Cameron"
Well boy was I very very impressed with the Oscars last night. While I’m not going to do a very thorough recap of the Oscar, I’ll simply say that they again were an amazing success. Following a similar path to the look and feel of last year’s show (hosted by master-classman Hugh Jackman), the 82nd Oscar ceremony went a slightly more funny route but still retained oodles of class. That’s something that I believe has been missing in recent years and I’m glad to see the return to form. So while I’m not going to give the nominees, the winners and an entire dissertation of my thoughts, here’s a quick rundown of…

Off the Shelf…’Lucky Number Slevin’
Certain films out there have twist endings that really make your jaw drop. However to be a successful “twist ending” usually the film will be able to perform and amaze on repeat viewings. Lucky Number Slevin isn’t one of them. However it still has quite a lot going for it and a fairly impressive “twist ending” despite being directed by virtually unknown Paul McGuigan and scripted by multiple cancelled show script-writer Jason Smilovic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30EeGDiI7MA

Off the Shelf…'Star Trek'
I can proudly say that after years of being a “born and raised” Star Wars fan, I am now starting to lean the other way…no, not the Dark Side, but I believe I am becoming a “neo-Trekker”. Weird, but this is the best ‘sci-fi’ film I’ve seen in a while and it really got me considering the other Space Opera property that I had overlooked for so long. Also Star Wars has just become continually disappointing since Episode I, so for me this is a welcomed change of pace. So here we are with J.J. Abrams‘ masterful direction of a Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman screenplay (we’ll forgive them for their Revenge of…

Off the Netflix Queue…'Babylon A.D.'
Boy it’s been a while since I’ve seen Vin Diesel in anything worth mentioning. To me, Boiler Room was his very best work. Why do you ask?? Because the movie wasn’t centered around him, that’s why. I may be alone in thinking this but he doesn’t have the chops to carry a film all by himself, and so he makes more of an impression when playing a bit part or part of, and I use the phrase loosely, an ensemble…i.e. Saving Private Ryan and Boiler Room. Admittedly I liked Pitch Black but that was a bit of an anomaly. In short, Babylon A.D. was yet another lack luster Vin Diesel vehicle that didn’t play…
