    G-S-T Review…The Expendables

Wow, this was the movie I was waiting to see for the past 18 months!! No let me replace that exclamation point with two question marks. I have to say I enjoyed myself but this was not what I was expecting it to be. With a passable story, The Expendables was action porn that effectively delivers the “mangasam” that adrenaline junkies have been waiting for. To me though, this lacks the sophistication Stallone has been working towards with each succeeding film. In short, you’ve seen this movie before; it’s a tapestry of every 80’s action movie but the difference is that this actually stars all those 80s action heroes. While I think calling…

G-S-T Multi Blog-A-Thon: “Films That Defined Us”

I’m sure that if you gathered all of us cinephiles/cinebloggers you’ll find that our lives as film fans are pretty comparable; we started watching movies at a young age and basically never stopped. Certain films (good or bad as they may be) have indelibly cemented our tastes and forever determined what we liked and didn’t like from that point on. Some are classics, others are are only classics in our minds. Some are dumb fun, some are iconic and others evoke weird stares from our friends. Either way, certain films in our lives take prominence above all others because of the impact they had on us at the time and probably for the rest of our…

G-S-T Review…Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

As this is pretty much the trend with all upcoming comic book films that aren’t Marvel or DC properties, I have not read the source material for Scott Pilgrim. Basically I just didn’t know about it. Did I miss the boat? No. These days, when filmmakers shoot these adaptations they (thankfully) take the mentality of moviegoers like myself into account. So with that said, I didn’t know squat about Scott Pilgrim but Edgar Wright (read Genius) made me feel like I’d been a fan of the comic all along. PLOT: Now I know this isn’t justifiable since I haven’t seen Inception yet, but my current opinion is that Scott Pilgrim vs.…

Random Film Thought of the Day…08.11.10

Ignorance can be a funny thing and it sure as hell was to me last night. Last last evening I attended an advanced screening of Scott Pilgrim (review coming later today) and the movie was replete with all the trailers that come right before it. Well one of them just so happened to be the trailer for Devil. If anyone reading this doesn’t know about it, follow this link to the trailer we posted. Anyway, keeping up on movies before they premiere is something fan boys have been doing since the dawn of time. Sometimes there are unexpected perks that come from knowing things about movies in advance; this was…

    Off the Shelf…'Steamboy'

This may fly in the face of anime buffs around the world but I just don’t care for Akira. Conversely I am just so enamored with Katsuhiro Ôtomo‘s other famous property Steamboy that I am nearly at a loss for words to describe it. Sure it is not as iconic as Akira but to me, this is the superior effort. Aside from the work of Studio Ghibli, this is probably the most gorgeous animated film I’ve ever seen. Steamboy really delivers the goods and ends on such a high note that any minor issues are all but forgotten in the awe of the finale. Masterpieces don’t come along very often…

The Wait Is Over…'The Expendables' In Theaters This Friday!!

Hot Damn! The action event of the decade is nearly upon us and all that waiting is just about over. Sure we’re written nearly a dozen posts about this film over the last year and a half, but what can we say, we’re all huge fans. The movie looks to be just awesome and I’m actually going to be fine if it is merely OK at best. Just seeing the amount of past and present macho film heroes on one screen is major eye candy. Story be damned, just blow shit up!! If Rambo 4 was any indication of what we can expect from Sly, this movie probably could possibly…
