Sweet Trailer(s)…007 Is Back In 'Skyfall'!

Oh boy, Bond is back and we can honestly say the wait has been far too long!! Since things about the projects have been hush hush until now, save for some snazzy still/set shots and a teaser that was all kinds of WOW, I can’t tell you how overjoyed we are to share the first full trailer for Bond 23, the mysteriously titled Skyfall…No more words, just watch!!! Not good enough for you? Then how about this “International” trailer which changes things up and offers something just a tad different… Daniel Craig is without a doubt one of the best (if not the most idealized) Bond and gives great new…

Ohhh, Look…Cloud Atlas Directors Attempt To Describe 'Cloud Atlas'

The Wachowski’s, Andy and Lana (formerly Larry) have sci-fi and action running through their veins. Two of their most high profile films show the inherent passion and lengths they go to when committing to a project. The Matrix trilogy was, in short, a benchmark in film history and a game changer to say the very least. Then came Speed Racer. While loved by some and loathed by others it still had merit and notable high points (like the race sequences) even if most people liken it to being hit by a rainbow with a mean right hook. But if there’s one thing the siblings have down pat, it’s spectacle. Anyway, for years the secretive…

    Sweet Trailer…Taken 2

No not Tekken 2, but containing equal amounts of ass-whooping, this is Taken 2, the sequel to Pierre Morel’s surprise/smash 2008 hit. Liam Neeson is back and this time even more lethal and intense than before. Since rescuing his daughter in the first film it looks as if he’s also managed to wrangle his x-wife away from her new super-rich husband. I guess that’s another of his very particular set of skills; skills [he’s] have acquired over a very long career. Enough talk, behold the full domestic trailer for Taken 2. While the first film ended in such a way you’d think it was impossible to continue the story, like we’re about to…

    G-S-T Review…Step Up Revolution

There’s really not much to say about a picture like Step Up Revolution, the fourth of its name. If anything, I admire it for daring to be anything more than a movie about Kids With Dreams striving to realize those dreams, though that’s not saying much. Like the other Step Up films, and last year’s remake of Footloose, Step Up Revolution has one raison d’êtere, and that’s to thrill audiences with great dancing in increasingly elaborate dance numbers. Judged on that criteria alone, the film succeeds as a light, well-intentioned but charmingly dopey crowd-pleaser. Just don’t go in expecting the elements of civil disobedience captured in the marketing to add…

    G-S-T Review…The Watch

A sincere question for my readers: is it worse for a movie to be derivative or lifeless? The Watch, the second feature by The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaeffer, borrows liberally from science fiction cinema classics like Invasion of the Body Snatchers (take your pick between the ’56 and ’78 versions) as well as contemporary greats like last year’s excellent Attack the Block, but the film’s worst transgression isn’t its unapologetic mimicry. Calling on decades-old genre traditions is one thing; turning out an embarrassingly brainless, thoroughly bland, and criminally unfunny attempt at sci-fi comedy is another entirely. The Watch shows as little interest in its aliens as its punchlines. Not to mention its characters. Like the best…

  • The CineMagic 8-Ball

    “The CineMagic 8-Ball” – In Theaters 7/27/12

When so many movies are released each weekend and trailers often seem better than the movie itself, what should one do? In this precarious situation, we consult the The CineMagic 8-Ball (TM) to help us see through the nebulous marketing haze. Doing so just might save us all a disheartening trip to the cinema and spare us unnecessarily springing for $7 popcorn. See what the 8-Ball says about this week’s releases… ——————————————————————————————————————————————- Step Up: Revolution Emily arrives in Miami with aspirations of becoming a professional dancer and soon falls in love with Sean a young man who leads a dance crew in elaborate, cutting-edge flash mobs, called “The Mob.” When…

    Sweet Trailer…'Life of Pi'

I have no opinion whatsoever on Life of Pi, the novel by French Canadian author Yann Martel; I haven’t read it in the decade-and-change since its 2001 publication. But that might change with the release of the trailer for Ang Lee’s upcoming adaptation of the book. Quick reaction– it looks absolutely gorgeous. Have a look below: Breathtaking visuals aren’t anything new to Lee’s cinema– he brings his brand of ocular magic to every film he shoots, if you ask me– but some of the images in here are pretty startling even coming from him. Watching the footage, there are a number of shots here that evoke urgency, wonder, fear, and awe,…

Christopher Nolan Bids Batman Farwell In Fond Send-Off

With the last leg of Christopher Nolan‘s Batman trilogy is now in theaters (and raking in record-breaking box office numbers if you weren’t aware) we’ve, sadly yet quite satisfyingly, reached the end of this particular Batman’s journey. As part of Nolan’s contribution to a forthcoming book titled The Art And Making Of The Dark Knight Rises, Christopher Nolan penned this foreword which, to comic/film fans the world over, is a reverent, classy and almost tear inducing send off to his massively successful addition to the Batman universe. Have a look and let us know if you need a shoulder to weep on… “Alfred. Gordon. Lucius. Bruce . . . Wayne.…

Ohhh, Look…Brit Marling, Shia LaBeouf and Robert Redford in 'The Company You Keep'

Robert Redford‘s upcoming film The Company You Keep is based on Neil Gordon’s novel of the same name. It tells the tale of a civil rights lawyer named Jim Grant (played by Robert Redford) and single father who go on the run when a brash young reporter (played by Shia LaBeouf) exposes his true identity as a former 1970s radical fugitive wanted for murder. As their actions spark a nationwide manhunt, Grant sets off on a cross-country journey to clear his name. Until now this project has been flying under the radar but sporting an impressive cast which includes Sam Elliott, Brendan Gleeson, Terrence Howard, Richard Jenkins, Nick Nolte, Anna Kendrick,…
