    G-S-T Review…Argo

Mark Twain once opined that truth is stranger than fiction, and if we accept his sentiment then Argo could be considered one of the most bizarre slices of reality ever portrayed on film. Did you ever hear the one about how the CIA enlisted the likes of John Chambers and Jack Kirby to whisk stranded Americans out of hostile territory at the height of the 1979 Iran hostage crisis? On paper, Argo‘s plot reads like something cooked up by the Coen brothers and Armando Iannuci, an episodic farce about the irreverent ludicrousness of government and the ignorant cruelty of humanity on an international stage; of course, the helmsman here is none…

    “The CineMagic 8-Ball” – In Theaters 10/12/12

When so many movies are released each weekend and trailers often seem better than the movie itself, what should one do? In this precarious situation, we consult the The CineMagic 8-Ball (TM) to help us see through the nebulous marketing haze. Doing so just might save us all a disheartening trip to the cinema and spare us unnecessarily springing for $7 popcorn. See what the 8-Ball says about this week’s releases… ——————————————————————————————————————————————- HERE COMES THE BOOM Former collegiate wrestler Scott Voss is a 42-year-old apathetic biology teacher in a failing high school. AMC Theatres' 'Lincoln' Q&A with Steven Spielberg & Daniel Day-Lewis

It’s getting close to the holiday season and that’s when studios unleash some of their most anticipated and sensational films. Among them is the Spielberg period-piece Lincoln. AMC Theaters recently held a Q&A with Steven Spielberg & Daniel Day-Lewis and the two, extremely talented and respected film personalities sat down to a whopping 42 minute session following the screening of their upcoming film. Spielberg always gives entertaining and immensely insightful interviews so have a look if you’re at all interested about the film (which between you and me looks like the duo can just collect their Oscars now). Enjoy! Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Hal…

    Sweet 2nd Trailer…'Django Unchained'

It’s tough to believe it’s been 4 whole months since we got our first look at Quentin Tarantino‘s Django Unchained. Well they say that good things are worth waiting for because this trailer is all kinds of awesome. Featuring QT’s razor sharp writing and some of the finest acting talent on the planet, this looks like the movie to beat this year (sorry Hobbit) and will make one helluva Christmas present. No more talk…enjoy!! Starring Oscar-winners Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz and Oscar-nominee Leonardo DiCaprio this follow-up to Inglourious Basterds can be expected to be equally saturated in great writing, superb acting and memorable characters/exchanges. Oh, man we can’t wait for this!! The Weinstien Company and Columbia Pictures have Django Unchained (“the D is silent“) scheduled to hit…

    Sweet Trailer…'Hitchcock'

While I’m growing warier of biopics every year, the first trailer for Sacha Gervasi‘s upcoming project, Hitchcock, has me hooked. Biopics inhabit this weird space in cinema where they’re meant to portray real events and people in a real time period, but through circumstance gloss over the truth in favor of melodrama; sometimes, those two elements complement one another and we get Hunger, other times they don’t and we get We Bought a Zoo. In the case of Hitchcock, Gervasi very clearly considers the man’s cheekiness to be an important central characteristic, and I have to say I’m glad the clip confirms that Hopkins will be playing up the man’s…

Ohhh, Look…Pixar Short 'Partysaurus Rex' In Full & On Line NOW!!

William Shakespeare once said that “brevity is the soul of wit“…to all you 21st century entertainment fiends that means that “less is more“. So while some Pixar fans might lament at the idea of the Toy Story bunch being relegated to a series of shorts before Disney/Pixar feature films, it’s not a bad thing. Why? Well it’s because the animation powerhouse is able to cram loads of content and heart into an uproarious 6 minute skit that is almost better than all three films combined. After 3 features, the world may not need another TS feature and I for one am fine with these short and sweet mini-adventures. So as movie goers who saw Pixar’s re-release of Finding Nemo…

Ohhh, Listen…Preview Thomas Newman’s Score From ‘Skyfall’

On October 5th fans around the globe celebrated the 50th anniversary of everyone’s favorite secret agent. Like a steam roller, Bond 23 has been pushing toward its November 9th release date. From an Oscar-winning director (and his video blogs), to a simply top drawer cast, to Adele’s sensationally Bond-esqe title song, it looks like Skyfall and will live up to the hype. Well as fans of films scores we at G-S-T were over the moon to find out that Thomas Newman would be lending his talents to the 007 franchise. As regular composer David Arnold had to bow out to help work on the 2012 Olympics, we’re excited to see what Newman will bring to the table.…

Pixar Goes Viral With Actual 'Monsters University' Website

Well, nobody ever accused Pixar of being anything other than creative, thoughtful, and detail-oriented. The animation studio’s next film, Monsters University, marks the first prequel they’ve ever entertained as a company, and while there’s been some hand-wringing over the project based on concerns over originality, it’s hard to feel that much anxiety over their 2013 offering when the preview material is as spot-on and engaging as this bit of ingeniousness. I grant that promotional work is one of Pixar’s realms of expertise: they know how to advertise and promote their projects like nobody else. The in-depth Monsters University website is no exception. Put simply, this thing is comprehensive. In point of fact, I…
