Exclusive First Listen: Henry Jackman’s Thrilling Score to ‘The Bluff’

When you need a score to move you, there’s a short list of usual suspects, and one of the best in the game is Henry Jackman. Whether he’s crafting something for the 8-bit realm, San Fransokyo or Jolly Old England, the MCU, the North Pole or the High Seas, the man has surely earned use of the phrase “I am the Captain now.” Jackman continues his propulsive and spellbindingly awesome hit streak with the music to The Bluff.

This thrilling original score by the award-winning composer features something perfect for this sword, salt, and sand survival tale: Kevin Olusola (Pentatonix) who displays his dynamic “celloboxing” talent throughout as he performs on cello while beatboxing simultaneously. Olusola, a Grammy-winning double threat, brings just the right touch to the score which makes the blending of acoustic styles in this modern throwback film exquisite.

Jackman is a pro at coming up with things that raise your pulse but also get you humming along. Herein, Jackman tried something just a little bit different:

“At Frank’s (director) request, I wrote what I hoped would be a lyrical and haunting melody. Once we had the central melody in place, the guiding word for the score became ‘renegade.’ We spent an inordinate amount of time crafting textures that felt both grounded and unsettled. Almost all of the sounds to the score came from a series of intimate recording sessions with individual musicians.”
