    G-S-T Review…Anonymous

What if the person you thought was your hero really wasn’t who he’s been made out to be? An interesting, if deflating, premise to say the least and one that has more potential, historically speaking, than any of the other Emmerich produced/directed films. But as this is a story of a character who is held in such high regard, Emmerich takes care to give this half true/half fictitious story the historical gravity it deserves but like most works by the great Shakespeare it is a little difficult to discern.

    G-S-T Review…The Rum Diary

The Rum Diary is one film that pays for the audience to know a little something about the author of the novel that inspired it going in. I’m not the least bit versed in Hunter S. Thompson’s work and aside from Terry Gilliam’s mind melting film don’t claim to know the first thing about Gonzo. Compared to what Gilliam showed us in Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas, The Rum Diary is nothing close that trip-tastic odyssey as this story is about Thompson (through his fictitious character Kemp) finding the method that would become his madness.

    Off the Shelf…’Winnie the Pooh’

If there’s one Disney staple that I am the most ignorant of it is Winnie the Pooh. Not that the world is hard to comprehend or that I’m oblivious of the characters but I’ve just not had much time with everyone’s favorite rumbly tumbly bear and his endless quest for honey. Not like it takes a lot to become familiar with the inhabitants of A. A. Milne‘s stories, I’ve just never been drawn to those characters. That said, after seeing this newest (and infinitely pleasing) story about Pooh and his friends I don’t mind telling you I am growing quite fond of them all.

Ohhh, Look…Johnny Depp Clip From Gervais/Merchant's 'Life's Too Short'

Last week we posted the trailer for the Ricky Gervais/Stephen Merchant hilarious looking faux-doc TV show Life’s Too Short. We already knew it would contain loads of the duo’s trademark awkward and uncomfortably brash comedy but below is our first look at what we can expect. Have a look after the jump and enjoy this short but snarky exchange that shows that, like an elephant, Johnny Depp never forgets…or forgives.

Sweet Trailer…'The Secret World of Arrietty'

Calling all you Ghibli fans!! After nearly 2 years of waiting we’re going to finally get a US theatrical release of The Arrietty (originally The Borrowers) aka Kari-gurashi no Arietty. Inspired by Mary Norton’s children’s fantasy novels this was released by The Toho Company in Japan last summer and Walt Disney is bringing this, like the UK release before now, to our theaters next year. Hand picked by Miyazaki himself, this feature is directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi who is another in the series of Studio Ghibli artists/animators making his directorial debut. Have a look at the beauty, wonder and spectacle in what looks to be another gem from the world famous Studio…

Hey Hollywood! Enough With The Prequels, Sequels & Reboots OK?

If there’s one thing that pisses me off, first as a fan and second as a collector, it’s that studios just don’t know when to end a series/franchise. When something is done right, gets a great fan base (with both movie goers and critics) and finishes strong you’ve got something destined for the history books. We would hope that the studios know enough to be done with something…sadly that’s just not the case.

Hauling Ass Or Dragging Foot: The Great Zombie Debate

Halloween is fast approaching and as this time of year is ripe with ghosts, goblins and all things goulish I thought it’d be appropriate to take a look at everyone’s favorite undead manace – The Zombie. As everyone knows there are two types: the slow moving Zombie (SMZ) or the Olympic sprinter Zombie (OSZ). If ever anyone asked, “What kind of Zombie is best?” I’m sure the debate would go on for quite some time as there are tons of fans in each camp that are steadfast in their opinion preferring one over the other.

Beneath the Earth Film Festival – Official Selections Available On-Line NOW

Happy Friday everyone! A few months ago we posted that yours truly would be participating in the grand jury for an awesome off-the-grid film festival. Based in the Big Apple, the Beneath the Earth Film Festival set to find the best short films out there. The difference here is that the fest would be held exclusively “on-line”. Yup, no need to travel to NYC to partake, this free festival offers these ambitious short films right on the BTE website. I have to say that some of them are very very good and with a little luck I can see some of these filmmakers setting off on a future in film.
