While I’m growing warier of biopics every year, the first trailer for Sacha Gervasi‘s upcoming project, Hitchcock, has me hooked. Biopics inhabit this weird space in cinema where they’re meant to portray real events and people in a real time period, but through circumstance gloss over the truth in favor of melodrama; sometimes, those two elements complement one another and we get Hunger, other times they don’t and we get We Bought a Zoo. It seems that no studio is without production/financial/creative woes. We heard about the long struggle to get Skyfall up and moving and for the past year we’ve been heard similar stories about the roller coaster ride that was the production of Disney’s The Lone Ranger. Let me be forthcoming: I initially laughed, nay scoffed, at Sinister based on its production credentials. I wondered if Jason Blum possessed an ambition to direct a trilogy of mono-titled horror films. Perhaps, I speculated, we’d see Malicious next, and if that made enough money we’d likely see the trifecta expanded to include such titles as Unpleasant and Eeeeevil. I’m asking, in earnest, for someone to explain to me the “trailer for a trailer” phenomenon that’s gaining more and more popularity as days go by. What’s the point? What’s the purpose? Is the intended effect one that truly lives up to the word “tease”? Do studios think that teasing upcoming trailers will ensure that those clips receive more hits than they would otherwise? It goes without saying that Al Pacino and Christopher Walken are titans of the film industry. Hard edged and gritty actors who earned their stripes (and our respect) decades ago, they really are the stuff of legend. Academy Award-Winning director Barry Levinson has some solid hits on his hands and while this may be new territory for him this looks like another solid win. More like a mash up of a handful of genres than a straight-forward fright fest, The Bay plays with found footage/viral horror, zombie-like ghouls, paranoia and more as well as setting the hysteria against a holiday not unlike Jaws. But like a buffet there’s enough going on to please most viewers.
